Illinois59
I try not to use scents or lures if possible. I would rather be undetectable and have the woods as normal as possible. If you have the time stay out there. You never know whats coming down the trail. Good Luck.
Adjam5
My sons and I have been hunting Rockland and Sullivan counties and it was very slow in the beginning of bow. It has started to heat up around Halloween and I would say now, the peak rut is happening. Bucks are bedded with does and won't leave them until they are bred. Opening day of gun we were covered in does and small bucks. This past few days, we are lucky to have seen any deer at all. I really don't use scents much, my son swears by Code Blue. I rattle to get things going and grunt to get deer over to shooting range. We still have 2 weeks left of rifle and a week of muzzleloading. Theres time left. Where are you hunting in NY? Turkeygirl
Glad I'm not the only one seeing does and no bucks....happens every year this way, neighbors push the woods hard on the opener and then all we see are does when we do small 2 person drives on only specific spots...how I got my little doe yesterday. We finally saw a nice spike today which Andy hit but must have hit very low, not much blood, he'll be fine I think, but yeah, not seeing any bucks at all compared to archery season....that spike is the first buck we've seen since I saw a dinky spike on the opener and Andy saw this spike when he jumped out of some goldenrod. Good news is, neighbors haven ot been on the farm land we hunt at all since the opener, we think the farmer may have kicked him off as a farmhand told us we were the only ones suppose to be up there, but just a rumor, who knows. I'm hoping the deer settle down and the bucks will start moving around
JakeN
since the boom boom started over here deer activity has decreased 75% for me personally.. ive got a touch discouraged but as said before who knows whats walking down the trail.... cant shoot em from the couch..... going to bed now and heading out in the mornin..... Good luck!!!

84 z28
I shot a 7pt and a doe on Sunday of opening weekend. Went out on the 22nd and 23rd shot at a doe but yanked the shot and missed at 40yds. Hopefully thnaksgiving morning will be nice. I agree since shotgun started the deer arent really moving. dsharp01
Been the same thing in SW Allegany County. seen some deer b4 gun season, but only 4 since the opener. IDK if they are all dead or hiding. quite a bit of yote pressures round here. think that has something to do with it. But discouraging none the less. stcif
Here's my NY update - Got back into bow hunting a lot this year. Saw a lot of bucks, spikes, 4's, 6's, several nice 8's. I saw more 8's in one week of bow hunting than my 23 years of gun hunting!! That may sound hard to believe. I passed on several does hoping for a shot at an 8, which in a previous post I explained how I shot one and couldn't find it. Very disappointing. Since southern tier gun opened I have been out about 7 times. I have seen 10 deer. All does. 7 of the does I saw last Saturday. Last Saturday I hunted in about 8-10 inches of powder snow. Very quiet walking. The same amount of deer are out there, state land included in my opinion, they are just super wary. They just spotted me and ran several times just out of range. From what I saw bow hunting, chasing was crazy about the 8th of November where I was.

Turkeygirl
I went out for an hour in our woods this morning, since there was a ton of tracks in the woods and our corn field from the morning before, including a huge set of tracks that came in by itself and went in on a couple set of tracks together, I'm betting it was a buck. Saw nothing but it's snowing good right now and we've gained a few inches. I'll probably go out later, spot and stalk my way into a stand, but tomorrow I think the deer will get pushed around.
