My Son's deer

Hunting with my son from November 17 to November 22

My son Troy came up to hunt the rut with me on Monday 17th and we have been hunting hard all week. Between the mid-day naps and hunting, I had no idle time to get into the forums.

The rut around here actually kicked into running/chasing gear here on the 17th also. I had been watching the deer carefully, up until the day before, and all I witnessed was some good pre-rut action, without the chasing.

We were seeing a few deer, but nothing close enough. It seemed that every time we sat down, the deer would come out somewhere else, or not come out until after dark. It was getting frustrating for us both, and I wanted to see Troy get his first really nice buck.

Troy was getting discouraged, and so was I, because I knew he was missing his little girl and wife at home. It was his last day here, yesterday, and he was planning on leaving, right after Dinner. I was sitting 2 fields over from him, and he was over by the creek.

The evening hunt started out with a doe and fawn passing by me, but 150 yrds away, headed in Troy's direction, early in the hunt. It's always nice to see a deer or two early to give you hope.

We had been laying scent trails, and using decoys all week , and tonight was no exception, accept I had forgotten to load the decoys, when we left home. After calling in a small buck Saturday morning, using the rattle bag, I decided to get more aggressive with the bag tonight.

It was about 1 1/2 hrs before dark, when I saw 2 deer across the field, between Troy and I. then I saw a third one pulling up the rear. As they got closer, I could see a nice buck, and what I thought was 2 does. They got about half way out into the field, heading my way, when the buck, decided to turn around and go back (for whatever reason). I was hoping it was headed for the creek, and Troy. The two deer crossing ahead of him, came by me at 7 yrds, and turned out to be a doe, and a little spike.

I waited to hear a shot from Troy's direction, but nothing. As the time went by, I realized that buck, must have went back up the hill, or hopped the fence into the neighbors land.

I decided to just do a lot of rattling and calling, in hopes of bringing something out from either behind Troy, or over behind me.

It was about 20 minutes before dark, and last shooting light, when I heard the shot. I had just finished rattling, and was so excited to hear Troy shoot, I started packing up my gear to get over there, to see what he got. I could have sat back, and hunted the last 20 minutes, but I was just too excited for my son.

I packed up, and stepped out of my blind. I looked down the trail, to my right, automatically, before heading to my left toward Troy. There, about 70-80 yrds away, was a big buck, and a big doe, standing there ...LOL .... Ooops..oh well. I didn't even care, and didn't even stick around to see how big he was. I was busted anyway and I just wanted to see my son's deer.

Troy said he came from my direction, so it must have been the same buck. It followed the scent trail, right to Troy .;)

He turned out to be a nice mature 3x3, and Troy's biggest buck to date.
