blacktailslayer
Sat in my treestand today on a piece of private property I have hunted on several years. I have never had a problem with deer spotting me, but every deer that came by within 30yds would stop and look up right at me. I checked the wind several times and did not make a single motion, but they somehow still knew I was there. Luckily they never did spook, but I doupt I would have ever gotten a shot if it was a buck. I believe not moving and having the wind in my favor are the only two reasons the deer did not spook. At the end of the day I remembered about people talking about how deer along with several other animals have see in the UV spectrum. When I got home tonight I got out a black light blue (blb) bulb and turned it on. Well my new Bass Pro coverall suit reflects UV light. It had a purple glow to it under the light. I put the light on some of my older camo and nothing happened. I guess I bought myself a new ground blind suit, since I will never wear it again hunting in the open. Has anyone else found this connection with their camo? I know that not all camo has UV reflecting dye added to them, but my new suit sure did. double_H
you can buy a soap that is supposed to kill UV. give it a try and let us know what happens.
hutchies
It's actually a spray..........I believe in it. My wife washed my shirt in with the reg clothes one day and I rewashed it in scent free and hung it for a week. Every since when I wear that shirt they stop and look right at me 70 yards out. Texan_Til_I_Die
It's simple science that certain fabrics, or more precisely certain fabric dyes, will fluoresce (glow) under UV light. And there is UV present in sunlight. Now, whether or not a deer's eyes are capable of detecting the glow....????
hutchies
QDMA did a report on this............Deer do see color just not on the scale that we do. I watched it a while back on the outdoors channel. Check this.........It explains alot. http://www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=
ruttinbuc
Who knows? Like scent lok, does that really help? Theory behind it all makes sense to where the deer eye can see blues and yellows. UV light is blue. Atsko has a video on this. http://www.atsko.com/index.html Click on the DVD
VermontHunter
Well wether UV can be seen or not by deer is still a great mystery to all, so why throw out that NEW Camo when you can just spray down with this product .. http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0004739410559a.shtml Edited November 24, 2008 by VermontHunter
blacktailslayer
It was opening weekend here for archery and the deer have not had pressure, since last hunting season. I never had any problems other years. I may try the UV killer sportswash. I just hope it works like they claim. I have heard some people say that it works by only dimming the UV reflecting dye and not eliminating it. I will give it a try sometime. The suit may have to sit off to the side until hunting season is over for that. I don't trust it after that exprience. None of my other hunting clothes would glow purple under the blb light; so I think I will stick to them.

Cybertech_hound819
I had the same problem 2 season ago with deer coming in and for whatever reason looking up at me. So i left that stand in over the winter and tryed hunting it the next season but the deer did the same thing. so i grabed anouther stand and set it up 20 yards from the other stand and killed 2 bucks out of it but they still looked up in that direction. i think that deer just look around and happen to look up. im not big on that uv stuff but if u say it works then il trust u im not ganna bash u on it its just not for me. stcif
I use Sportwash. It doesn't kill the UV, it just doesn't have UV brighteners added I believe. I have used the UV killer spray a while ago. It sprayed a white sticky spray on the clothes. Then I wondered if this spray was adding scent. All this stuff can drive you crazy. Then I think about how my Uncle used to sit in ground blinds bow hunting, smoke cigarettes and shoot deer like crazy...
ruttinbuc
Yes, Sportwash does not have any brighteners in it. i don't get picked off as much after washing my hunting clothes with it. Name brand unscented detergents don't have any dyes or perfumes, but they do use brighteners. Brighteners as described in the dictionary are optical whiteners or fluorescent whitening agents used in cleaning process. Under the influence of ultraviolet light, emit a visible blue-white light. Over time the Sportwash should take out all of the UV.
blacktailslayer
My trail didn't set them off either. My trail was behind me in my stand. The wind was perfect.
blacktailslayer
Here are some websites on deer vision. There are two websites on horse vision that are the same, but can give a person an idea on deer vision. I'm not saying that deer and horse vision is the same. Hope this helps a little more for the people who are interested in this thread. http://www.pnas.org/content/100/14/8045.full http://news.nationalgeographic.com/n...etmammals.html http://arjournals.annualreviews.org/....081307.164228 http://www.journalofvision.org/1/2/2...-jov-1-2-2.pdf http://www.genetics.org/cgi/reprint/153/2/919.pdf http://www.springerlink.com/content/t8107t18v3j8g71r/ http://www.journalofvision.org/1/2/2/article.html http://hunting.suite101.com/article....o_deer_see_you http://www.qdma.com/articles/details.asp?id=48 http://home.adelphia.net/~geffert/deervis.htm http://digitalcommons.unl.edu/cgi/vi...icwdm_usdanwrc http://www.atsko.com/articles/animal...eferences.html
backwoods07
The UV killer isn't a wash.........It's a spray. I bought a granulated detergent that boasted "no UV brightener." I think it was made by Wildlife somethin or other

blacktailslayer
Well I went back in that stand on Turkey Day and wore my old camo that would not glow under a blb light. This time the wind was not all that great, but the deer did not spot me like they did in my other suit. I did have a doe that picked up my scent and was searching for the source for about 15 minutes, but never found me in my stand. Thought I would just update what I found. I just know that I will check on all future purchases from here on out and make sure they don't reflect UV light. It won't cost me any more money to just quickly check something that I feel may help my hunting. Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day. wtnhunt
I still don't believe in the whole UV thing. I do.:D Leonard Lee Rue says that deer see in the uv spectrum where we cannot, I think it makes a lot of sense. Read some of the man's books and you will see he is pretty knowledgeable. I use sportswash or comaparable washes.
