toddyboman
Heck of a deal! 2 nice bucks sad they had to go that way but better then both becoming coyote food. As for the taxidermist not wanting to keep the horns he does want them to be in his position then get stolen and he be held responsible. Sad that others steal but it happens unfortunately. SIWhitetailHunter
I totally agree with torminator. I posted the pics on here to share of the deer I was shown locked. I didn't post them because I thought it was cool a kid I knew shot a monster that was locked on my cousin's farm. It's cool to see them locked, but as far as shooting one while locked goes. No thanks, it'd never feel right. I'd rather have my year going the way it is and know that I've been outsmarted about 4 times by the same deer as to walk up on him fighting another one for an easy shot. If they were both under my stand and started fighting I might feel different about it ,but I don't know. Two more awesome deer though that fall to their horns locked. Awesome find for sure, nothing you can do but shoot the live deer, just sucks that it happens the way it does.
ruttinbuc
Definitely a rare situation. I would also feel a little awkward about it as well. It would be more of a mercy killing with a story to tell.

So you are telling me you would shoot it or you wouldn't.... you say no thanks at first then say you have to shoot the one that is still alive???? if you would not shoot the one that was still alive and near death anyway then shame on you.... As a sportsman I would think you would want to put the one out of its misery. it was going to die anyway JMO
EKYhunter
Nothing unethical about shooting that buck! Your dad came upon the find of a lifetime. Sounds like you did everything by the book in getting the other tag for the already deceased buck. I say congrats to your dad and thanks for posting. What a find! I have seen many times where people have shot, cut or broke the antlers off, and I am not saying he should have, but that is an option. It was not necessarily a death sentence being locked with the dead buck either. Trophy? Yes for sure.....fair chase, but with an asterisk. Bowtech_archer07
Wow, those are 2 great bucks. Congrats to your dad, but it's definitely sad to see 2 giants come to an end like that.

The whole situation is very unfortunate, but very real in the wild. My question is:how is that not a death sentence? They are locked up good enough that the one has already died. There is really no way for the living deer to eat, drink, or defend itself. The racks aren't going to shed for months, so IMO that deer was going to die a very agonizing death- starvation or 'yotes. I believe that the hunter did what is ethical- put it out of it's misery. It, however, would have been nice to actually get 2 DNR tags, so the hunter could still go "harvest" a buck rather than shoot a buck. Just my 2 cents. I was referring to one of the antlers being cut or broke off...in the wild, probably a death sentence. If broken off by hunter and allowed to run off, possibly survivable depending on the exhaustion level, or any other injury the buck may have received during the time it was locked up. I'm not saying its not a cool trophy what-so-ever....I probably would have shot it myself and done the exact same thing. . Born4it
Hey Man...great story! Glad to get to hear it over the phone and see the deer in person! I know this guy, folks...he's my best friend and huntin' partner, and he's as "by the book" as they come, along with his dad. They're very ethical hunters, and I don't think there's any question that the other deer would have died of exhaustion if it had eventually gotten away. Hunter did the right thing in this case by shooting the live deer and taking it straight to the taxidermist! Just to clear something up, and I'm not saying anyone is accusing anyone else of anything, but the hunter in this case is not bragging about harvesting both deer, being a masterful hunter, or taking credit for much at all...just being lucky. Like someone said, it's unfortunate, but it happened, and the hunters, along with myself, feel very fortunate to have seen and been a part of it. Awesome thing to witness..congrats Bud!
