Widowmaker
What have you used to boil your head in. I can't find a pot with the right dimensions so that the head will fit in. All help appreciated. Thanks!
TexasDeerHunter
Just finished one last night. I use a large stock pot, think its about 12 quarts . Bought it at either Academy or Wal-Mart, it was pretty cheap , around $12 or $14 bucks.
WHISKEYSWAMP
I'm not sure how big the one is I use but the skull fits perfectly... you don't need to put the antlers down in.
Swamphunter
Check your hardware store...that is where I saw them. I did however use one of my wifes crock pots and suffered the penalty of getting caught doing it....
Eric
Hello Widowmaker My friends and I do quite a few each winter. Take a 55 gal oil drum-empty, cut it in half and weld back together with the bottom of drum in middle. Oh yeah, cut the top off and discard. Cut a hole in bottom to stick firewood in. Fill top half w/ water. We you pieces of rerod to tie rack to hold horns obove water. Small racks can fit 2 sometimes but big basket and above usually only one will fit. Takes awhile and requires kindling the fire but not to bad. You can get empty ones from a local coop/farm service or possibly a farmer. huntinsonovagun
Camping section of wal-mart has an oval-shaped pan that is a deep blue that is kind of speckled. Works great for euro mounts.
RTF
Go to the seasonal isle of Wal-Mart and look for the big black pots that are used for boiling canning jars.
Guest redleg soldier
Crab Pot I use a simple crab cooking pot and then placed a couple short 2 x 4 boards on top to keep the antlers outta the water, set the whole affair on my BBQ grill and then boil. Really simple and effective
Hardwood_HD
i found one of the blue speckled ones and used it but the buttom burnt out on my second skull.. now i am using an oval shaped gas tank that came with this boat motor i bought, jus cut the top off.. it should last a long time its very heavy duty.. RTF
As far as making sure the antlers do not come in contact with the boil solution, wrap tin foil around them.

Zambo
One thing that has worked well for me is to not boil the water real hard. I use a real soft or slow boil of the water and this helps keep the bottom of the antlers brown. With a hard boil all I did was remove the good color off the antler burrs. pendog
I hope this is not a hijack but.... What do you use to put some color back into the antlers that have turned off white due to being boiled? I have heard stain???? Thanks
crazylegz70
You can use stain, but remember to put it on LIGHTLY and then add more as you go....You can also use acrylic paints...
Gator
I've yet to have the antlers turn a different color when doing the initial boil, and have done quite a few. I had to get a new pot this year, and used one of the blue speckled ones. I wrap foil around the antlers when doing the bleaching phase though. I have had some turn a little bit when doing this, but it's really hard to see that unless your looking for it
pointing_dogs_rule
I hope this is not a hijack but.... What do you use to put some color back into the antlers that have turned off white due to being boiled? I have heard stain???? Thanks I use shoe polish. Buy black and brown and mix the colors until they match the antler color. If too light then just add a little more color. Works good to blend the colors in. good luck to all the dog
