Shaun_300
I'm looking into getting a rifle for mid-sized game and a little bit of varmint shooting in the .25 to .27 caliber range. I'm trying to decide between the .25-06, .260 Rem, or .270 WSM. Just looking for some opinions. Strut10
I'd say the 25-Oh from the three you've listed.
hangunnr
I'd go with a Rem Model 7 CDL in .260 then have it punched out to a AI chamber. hangunnr
johnf
If you don't reload I would go with the 25-06.
m gardner
The 25-06 will eat barrels if you shoot alot. I've had three so far. The 260 is your best bet for accuracy and long life but it isn't a flat shooting caliber. I had one when they first came out about twelve years ago. They will both kill game up to the size of elk, but the elk will appear to be disinterested for awhile then they fall over. Mark
Hoosierbuck
I would go with the standard .270 or the .25-06. Might even want to consider the .243. Helpful, eh? HB

Texan_Til_I_Die
Well, since you're considering a short magnum, how about the 25 WSSM? 85 gr Ballistic Tip at 3470 fps for varmints and a 120 gr Soft Point at 2990 fps for deer sized stuff. csualumni21000
Do you load your own. Any of those will do well if you do. If not find out which has the best selection for ammo.
Shaun_300
No I do not reload, I've been opting for the .25-06 personally but wanted some other opinions. Texan I have looked at that .25 WSSM and like the ballistics. We don't have the amount of stores that sell ammo up here as you do down there, so availability may be a little limited with that caliber. m gardner
If you don't reload, the 270 winchester is your best bet. It's cheaper to shoot than the 25-06 and the trajectory is the same. I'm shooting my fourth one right now. Wore out the last 3. This one will last awhile since I don't live in the middle of millions of prarie dogs like I used to. Guest MIC65Frit
I shoot a Winchester Model 70 Classic Compact in a 7mm08...great ballistics, nice recoil, and deadly accurate, what's not to love. Ammo is about $30-$45 depending on brand and bullet that it's topped with. I shoot a Hornady 139 gr "Light Magnum" SST... I love it! Nice Group at 100yds...but that's just me! If you don't want to reload get a 270 Winchester to do the double duty. It's hard to beat the 223REM for economy when shooting varmints. Factory loads can usually be had at a price that's very reasonable. It will be very effective on up to coyote size stuff. Maybe you should be looking at getting two guns
wtnhunt
Pretty big fan of the .270 here so I might be kind of biased. I would probably go with the .270 or the .25-06 Shaun, although the .270 here right now seems to be maybe a bit too popular. Our wal mart store does not have any ammo for them, NONE which is a first ever in my experience. Good thing I am well stocked. They had plenty of .243, and a limited supply of .30-06 and .308, but no .270 and he did not know when he would be getting any in either. He said it was the same for the other local stores too.
