bowhunterman1
We own about 100 acres in cumberland, county VA. Here it is legal to hunt with dogs. Our land consists of 15 acre field and a good amount of open hardwoods with some small 3 acre pines spread throughout. OUr land was clear cut about 20 years ago except for a small 10 acre parcel with oaks that are about 200 years old. To our left is a goat farmer with a 4 foot high fence behind the property is a fox hunting club and to our right is about a 500 acre farm with 1-5 year loblolly pine througout and a good amount of hardwoods to. Opening day of firearms season i saw about 10 does and 2 nicee 8s being chased by dogs but they wer just to far with a shotgun. That was the last time i saw a deer in the woods and taht was about 3 weeks ago. When we leave to come home we scan the field with our brights to see if any deer have come out at night. Every night when we leave there 3-5 good shooter bucks and maybe 10 does in the field. I dont know where they are coming from. Dogs run behind us and to our right. We have plenty of deep ravines and about 30 yards of knee high grass around the field. DOes anyone have any ideas to where these deer are coming from and where to set up with the dogs? It is possible that they are spending their time on the goat farmers property because they knoe dogs cannot jump that fence
stcif
It's hard to say without knowing the land. My guess would be they are where they aren't pressured. Usually to me that means posted land or land not hunted. They are amazing.
Guest noidurism
if/when you can afford it. buy some trail cameras and set them up and take your time and scout around, look around closely you should be able to see some main trails(especially in the weedy fields), rubs/scrapes on trees, just try not to scent up your area too much. hope this helps! wtnhunt
Welcome to the forums. A map might help. Really do not know much about running dogs, but would guess there is a good chance the dogs might be running the deer off of a property that size pretty quickly.
