ChasinTail
I am planning a trip up to my moms in mid January to the Pensacola area of FL. I wanted to drive up and hunt a WMA in Alabama and heard Barbour County WMA is a great one. Can anyone give me advice or let me know if this is even a place I could get access to? I was basically going to speed scout an area and hunt for 2 or three days. I heard does and one buck are legal to take. Is this true? Any local knowledge would be helpfull. Anywhere I should check out or stay away from etc... Thanks in advance!
Flintlock1776
Depends on when you go. I'll be in Sumter the middle of January just in time for the rut. Good luck.
DSGB
I've never hunted that area, but I do know Barbour County is one of the counties with antler restrictions. Here is a link to a map and regulations for the area: http://www.outdooralabama.com/hunting/wildlife-areas/wmamaps/BarbourCountyMap2009.pdf
ChasinTail
Thanks for the great link! Do you know of any other WMAs in Alabama that I might want to try?
Guest countrygirl42482
Well, this probably won't help you much on this trip, but if you're ever between the Montgomery and Birmingham area, there has been some really good deer taken at the WMA in Helena, AL. There's some decent deer in the Cahaba River WMA in Bibb County, but it's always extremely crowded the days of the WMA hunts and there's been a lot of messed up racks killed out here. But I have heard of a couple of does with pretty good racks..One of them was a 7 point doe. But yeah, if you're ever this far up, try Helena! Good luck on your hunt in January! heathcoerracin
i actually hunted on the Boykin Management area today. they let us dog hunt them twice a year, and found some absolute giant scrapes. In my opinion, some of the biggest deer in the state of alabama, and the southeast for that matter, are right there in Boykin. The hunting club im a member of backs up to this land, and we kill some monsters that come off of there. Its about 30 mins north of Mobile, so your only about 2 1/2 hours away from home. Cahaba river has some monsters, but so does Scotch up in Coffeville. Hope that helps. If ya want more info pm me

Bowsonly
I'm currently up in Anniston right now, waiting for the season to start..I've been scouting but haven't spooked any deer, although signs are present..I'll be primarily hunting the Chocolocco WMA.. I also created a forum for Alabama WMA hunters (specifically), similiar to one I was a member of in Virginia..Come on over if you like and post some info if ya have any..http://alwma.proboards.com/
tennswamper
Barbour is your best bet for an older buck in that area of the state. Go to www.outdooralabama.com and read up on the regs. They do have I think a "3pt on one side rule" down there on that WMA. You should hit the rut I would imagine at that time.
ep9428
Redhawk could you help a fellow hunter out? I just purchased my permit for the Freedom Hills I have only hunted the area twice two years ago. I am not familiar with the area at all. Could you give some pointers on what areas might be ok to hunt?
