todya after thoasands of hours in the field huntign coyotes I seen it, I seen a single coyote tryign to get a deer! I ahve always said coyotes will not take a deer down that is not sick or weak, I will admit I was wrong, theyre was abotu 50 whitetial in a field, i knwo the coyotes follow the deer lookign for weak so i walked to within abotu 500 yards sunk down and was abotu to call when i spotted a coyote, he then charged the herd deer runnign everywere, he was on one then another and another, I was actually laughing it was so funny couse they were making him run in cirles, then I seen a ball of fur fly lol, a 130" buck kicked him as he turned a corner, the coyote rolled like he was hit with a 300 weatherby, at one time I had him chase a deer by me not more then 200 yards, i was on him but deer in the background, this went on for abotu 15 minutes when I decided this is going to be the easiest coyote i ever called in, I grabbed my fawm bleet and blew it quiet but more harsh to sound like a doe, i was expectign the coyote to charge in, he kept chasing the deer in circles, then he stopped looked in my direction and was gone in a instant, no idea why he did not coem in I know he did not hear, see or smell me, but must of had a feeling! ALl I know it was one of the most exitign times I cam remember out in the field!

Re: coyote vs deer herd

cool, musta been a very hungry cyote. I bet they get a few young fawns, and maybe they take adults in areas where the deer are smaller, but i doubt they take too many healthy adult deer up here. I could be wrong though, we really have very few cyotes where i am because the wolves kill them. That would have been a cool sight to see though.

Re: coyote vs deer herd

Cool time! The last yote I shot was stalking a blacktail doe and twin fawns in January in California. The fawns were decent sized by then, but the yodel dog circled downwind and started the stalk. I was pig hunting at the time so I just watched the events unfold through my scope. The yote chased the deer up the ridge and could never get the upper hand on the deer. It stopped on a little ledge on the hillside and looked around, thats when I took over. That was its last deer chase.

Re: coyote vs deer herd

Maybe its because the deer are smaller (about 100 - 120 lbs for a doe and 120 - 180 for a buck) or it might be because we have so stinking many coyotes, but our mortality rate from coyotes and mountain lions combined is as much as 20% per year. So says the local biologist.

I definitely shoot, or at least shoot at, every one I see.
