NS whitetail
Here are some pics of the dangers of my job in the winter months. Yesterday while out on the sea, we iced up really bad. The temp was 3 F with a windchill of - 40 or so. Early afternoon we had to stop hauling lobster gear and beat the ice off with an ice mallet. The boat was getting real top heavy and once when she rolled down in between two waves, we thought that she was going to roll right over ---- Scary moment , that's when we decided to start beating. Remember this is saltwater. this is looking out of the wheelhouse window at the bow of the boat this is the block that the rope comes in over this is the top of the wheelhouse

Pulling things from the water, getting sprayed...all at well below freezing. You definately earn your paycheque.

NS whitetail
Re: dangers of the job (some pics) [ QUOTE ] Speaking of survival suits, did you guys put yours on as soon as she started icin' up? What survival suits do you carry? Mustang floater suits (all they do is help the family find the body)? Do you carry the Micky Mouse suits (dry suits)? [/ QUOTE ] We were hauling lobster gear so it is impossible to wear a survival suit while doing that, but we were also keeping an eye on the ice build up. We have the REAL survival suits. A few years back, a scallop dragger went down off of NS in Feb. and the crew who were wearing their suits were rescued after 11 hours in the freezing water. Funny thing is, it is not mandatory to have these suits on all fishing vessels. yes, we have an inflatable life raft
