Late season in NY

Well last day of shotgun is today...just went outside to fill our birdfeeders and it is too nasty for me. so I'm calling it an end for shotgun for the year (like 6 years now not getting a buck with shotgun), but the buck tag carries over into late archery and can be put on a buck or doe. So I'm going to pull my bow back out, and try to get out this week for late archery. Actually want to try a new spot, the camp I work at, had a little natural blind set up there and there was a scrape line not too far away so who knows.

Any tips for late season archery hunting? What works or doesn't work?

Hunt food plots or bean/corn fileds. Stay back about 20-50 yards in the thickest timber/cover or low spot around. The big bucks will likely not enter until dark, but they might skirt the edges just before. That's how I arrowed an 11-pointer on the last day (Jan 17) of last season.

Who knows Doc.....it hasn't been pressured very much at all hereb y home, and over on the camp property...shouldn't have been other people hunting (but people will still trespass anyway) and with this wicked cold temps, I hope it'll get them moving. We are suppose to have a little bit of a warm-up for 2 days, that bring the deer out of the deep stuff...

I wonder how long it takes the deer to get over their gun season trauma to the point where they start moving again in legal shooting light.

Good point Doc, good luck with your hunt but around here even though we don't pressure them much you would be lucky to see a buck on natural travel patterns right now.

The only suggestion that I can give is to find the food sources and concentrate on them.

You know, another huge problem I have with the late season is the lousy cold weather. What is required for me to be able to last more than a 1/2 hour is I have to bundle up pretty good. that's not a problem with a fire-arm (sorry for using that term), but with a bow, I simply cannot shoot with a lot of clothing bulging and tugging at my arms. The anchor gets hard to reach, the arm alignment goes way out of kilter, the follow through does not follow through and contact with bulging sleeves is a 50-50 proposition. In short 12" groups at 20 yards are considered wonderful shooting under 'heavy clothes' situations. That has always been a problem for me and apparently always will. Man, how I envy guys that can go musk-ox hunting dressed like an eskimo and still hit what they're shooting at. It's never going to happen for me.
