Flintlock1776
I am watching a show on TV and the bear is up the tree. I am just curious as I have never hunted a bear. No answer is wrong or right but: Would you shoot a treed bear?
stevebeilgard
i like local tradition. if you chase a bear with hounds and tree it, so be it. shoot it. i like spot & stalk. however, with hundreds of opportunities i've never chosen to shoot a bear. i just don't like bears. colorado bob
Would you shoot a treed mtn lion? How about a raccoon? The hunt & the trill of the chase is what it's about. Killing is secondary. Try a hunt with hounds-----a bear can run forever----thru thick & thin. A cougar will take you thru rock ledges, cliffs, etc. Both are hard to keep up with the hounds. Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I wouldn't. No problem with those who do use hounds or anything to tree them, but it's just not for me. I usually change the channel when hunts like that come on.

Dakota
That's how all my relatives in NC hunt or hunted them. My great-great-grandfather shot one that was covered with a 5" thick layer of fat underneath his hide! They just used muzzleloaders and lever guns back then, but I know of a few of my mom's cousins that still hunt black bears in the Smokies. Wish I could join them some time. OJR
Yes, I would shoot a treed bear! Now let me ask this, would you shoot a bear in a den that is hibernating? I would and did!

fly
I voted yes. Here's what I wouldn't do: Last spring there was a dead deer near the highway in Idaho. There was a black bear hanging around feeding on it. A guy in camp encouraged me to hang out by the road and wait for the bear and shoot. Not sure what the regulations are, but it didn't matter because I didn't travel 1700 miles to shoot a bear from the highway.
davetucker
I voted yes also!!I guess after i voted i should have thought it over more!!I guess my answer would be if it is the way you hunt so be it!!I pesonally hunt over bait!!It to me (and is only imho)is no fun turning a dog loose and running a bear up a tree!!Now (imho) baiting is a little more challenging!!You have to get the bears coming faithfully to the bait,be quiet enough getting pulled up on the bear, and you can't run in to your stand with a bunch of noise!!So even if you do bait the bears there is still somewhat of a hunt method involved!!Thats just my opinion, and everyone else is to!!
