Squirrelhunter91
Well.. this past weekend was the last weekend of rifle season here in NY. Late Archery/Muzzleloading opens up tomorrow. I had an unfilled doe tag for the WMU where our property is upstate. It took me 3 years of being denied for that area to get this tag so needless to say, I was not letting this tag go unfilled. I sat on stand Saturday morning in the box blind hoping to find a doe and I had no such luck. I sat til about 8:00am then called it a morning on a count of frozen toes. We planned on doing some drives with the guys this weekend but most everyone tagged out on bucks the first week of the season so no one was really out hunting this late. My dad and I spoke to a farmer and asked him if we could drive this one particular patch of woods he had permission to hunt on and he said sure. We have done this drive in years past and it always held does so our expectations were high. My dad dropped me off on one end of the woodlot and then he drove and parked the truck at the other end. He called me when he was about to start and I told him to go ahead as I was in position and ready. I set myself up on the main trail in the woods because I had a stream about 30 yards to my left with blowdowns alongside the bank and a field 30 yards to my right. I knew the deer wouldn't cross the stream, it was too deep and I knew they wouldn't expose themselves in the open field so they were gonna come head on at me on the trail. So at 11:01am my dad called me and told me he was starting. Around 11:12 I catch movement off to the left and get my gun up. Then I see it was 2 does. The first doe came down the trail and hit the brakes as soon as she saw me. I picked my gun up and layed the crosshairs on her chest and pulled the trigger. POW!! She went down like a ton of bricks on the spot. The second doe just stared at her and doubled back the way they came after not figuring out what happened. I called my dad up to let him know we had some more meat down. She was a huge doe!!! When we weighed her, she weighed 140lb dressed!!! She also had a really thick fat layer on her.. See the pics.. Anyway.. here's the pics: Check her size out in comparison to me: Fat layer: Check out her hooves.. They were white and spongy on the bottom of them. All we could make of it is that she was a swamp doe. You know, kinda like how you sit in the bathtub too long, your fingers get all wrinkly and spongy, her hooves remained soft as she was in the swamp most of her life: She barely even fit in the bed of the truck!! We drove on the highway the whole way home with her hooves sticking up out of the bed like this: And here's the slug hole from the Brenneke slug out of my Mossberg 500 20ga. There was no exit on her either and no recovery of the slug: Edited December 8, 2008 by Squirrelhunter91

Hoyt03
very nice doe, congrats on all the deer this year. Seems like driving is the way to go right now, with the deer not really moving much during day light on their own.

fly
Congratulations! Well "Joe" I can see your enthusiasm and passion for deer hunting in you posted pictures. I (as well as many others in the forums) are lucky to share that passion. I'll hunt hard in the rain one day and see nothing. That night I'll swear I will not go back out in the rain for the rest of the season. Two days later I back out in the rain because I just can't get enough! It's an addiction and I love it! I'd say more, but I got to get out to the woods because I have an either sex bow tag that's burning a hole in pocket. >Frank

Adjam5
Geez! How big is your freakin' freezer dad? WTG Joe (that rhymes) :D:D Last year I had to buy another freezer. We have one upright and a chest type. BOTH are full. With 5 deer taken this season between Joe and I, we are bulging with meat. My wifes screaming there is no room for her stuff:p. We did donate 2 deer to two family's that were less fortunate and do not hunt. We still have this weekend to go with the smokepoles:)
