Rem308
What do you think the H & R Handi Rifles, New England Firearms, and other single shots in the .223? I see them, have shot a few of them (just not at long range) and I wonder if that may be a good rifle for me, mainly for the range? I would be shooting mainly between 100 and 400 yards and have wanted a .223 for a while. I see a lot of reviews on the tactical Bolt Action rifles, but wasn't sure about the accuracy of the single shots. Anyone have any experience? Thanks folks. m gardner
That looks like the H&R Ultracomp I had 12 years ago. It was in 270 and kicked very little. I used it for a few years after a bad injury then gave it to my brother-in-law. It shot very well. We killed deer and coyotes with it out to 300 yards or so. I gave my nephew a New England Combo gun in 270/12 gauge. It shot well enough. I fixed the triggers to break nicely at 3 pounds or so and reloaded for them. They were never tack drivers and would start to walk after a few shots. My buddy Cody had one in 223 and it shot extremely well. He hit prarie dogs regularly at long range with it. Take a chance and get one. Some shoot well and some don't. They are a rugged inexpensive rifle. Mark
Strut10
The NEF Handi-Rifles come under the old "you get what you pay for" deal. They are servicable and reasonably accurate guns. But, not unlike the Ruger #1 (which is galaxies of quality beyond the NEF) they are not widely regarded as being consistent tack driving rifles. Fit and, especially, finish are lacking, as well. A quality bolt gun will be, on average, more accurate out of the box and much easier to accurize even further. That being said..........I'd feel much better about tossing a Handi-Rifle in the bed of the pickup than one of my $1500 accurized bolt guns. I guess my point is I would not consider the NEF for a second as a dedicated "git-r-done" tack driver. But they would have great merit as a reasonable, inexpensive truck gun. Doc
Needless to say, I am extremely interested in this thread, since I am scrutinizing other single shot rifles. Don't forget that Rem308 did also include other single shot rifles into his inquiry. Doc
johnf
Check #11 in this tread. http://www.realtree.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79225 I've got 3 nef's and all are good shooters. The 25-06 is probably the best. The shots in the picture were all shooting prone and the gun will probably shoot better than I can.
Gator
I have one in .243, and it's a shooter as well.
Rem308
Yes, when I made this post I wanted to include all of those Single Shot rifles....I just listed the make and model, but I really meant to include all. I really appreciate this info, because I am serious about this subject. I research a lot before making a purchase and opinions do count. Thanks for the post about the others above, and I hope to read some more. Thanks folks.
doubleA
Single Shots come in different flavors and I prefer the fixed breech models over the break open designs of the H&R, T/C etc. I have a few in my stable and they are accurate solid guns. Here are a few Coopers, they are bolt action single shots in various calibers. A popular falling block design, the Ruger #1 Another bolt action, it's a single shot Remington 40X KS in 300 WBY A Browning 1885 High Wall in 7mm STW,another falling block I am certain that all except the 1885 is available in 223 rem new. They are no longer made but the Low Wall version Browning/Winchester may have been chambered in the 223 and could possibly be found used. Rem308
WOW those are pretty rifles! Sheesh, I had thought the whole time about the break open single shots and had completely neglected to think of the single bolt guns. Strut10
WOW those are pretty rifles! Sheesh, I had thought the whole time about the break open single shots and had completely neglected to think of the single bolt guns. The single bolt gun opens up a bunch of options that, I'm pretty certain, would make you happier in the end. The 1885's are sweethhearts, as well. Beautiful guns. Jeramie
Im a fan of the NEF or H&R rifles. Are the they best buy out there, probably not. However if youre on a budget like I am they are a great rifle for the money. If youll take the time to line them out properly a 300-400 yard shot is very realistic. Ive shot a few and a simple .223 was probably the most accurate. Keep in mind that all guns are different. They will like different ammo and will each shoot a little different. Ive also noticed that they seem to hold their value pretty decent if you get a popular cal. For the money I dont think you can go wrong. Rem308
However if youre on a budget like I am they are a great rifle for the money. I'm wanting to get a nice .223 but I can't afford to 'break the bank'. I am leaning towards the NEF and H&R for this reason.
Jeramie
Again, the .223 was a match striker. However, Im not a fan of the Rossi. I would personally stick with the H&R.
toddyboman
My encore 223 shoots pretty good.....good enough to kill prairie dogs at 400 yards I personally have not been around a NEF rifle.
pendog
Are you bench shooting or real world hunting? I have used my NEF 243 break on several hunts where i did not want to bring my "good" guns. Good yote gun that your not as concerned about scratching, good gun for the younger ones to start on. 4 shots at deer = 4 dead deer

Leo
I know the Coopers are tack drivers. But this in my opinion is one of the finest single shots ever made! You lucky dog!

You lucky dog! .....Ditto that, Leo!!...-absolutely beautiful... -you have some pretty awesome guns,DoubleA!...:) ....and your Remington X Kevlar stock ,also.... I haven't seen one in a .300 WBY....only seen .308's- pretty impressive, I have enjoyed the most, seeing that gun of yours...! -My only question is why no one has bothered mentioning and suggesting the Savage bolt action .223..... -for what Rem308 has inquired....the purpose he intends to use it for, cost-effectiveness, accuracy, and the fact that is American made..... -that would be my choice-(if cost was a main factor)... http://www.lipseys.com/itemdetail.aspx?itemno=SV200223&items=sales

Rem308
Are you bench shooting or real world hunting? For the most part, I'd be sitting at a bench, or hunting using a really good rest. Shooting at the range, I'd be setup w/ sand bags.
johnf
NEF = China I've talked to a guy who builds and services them. I think he was in Connecticut or Pennsylvania. BTW Rossi rifles are made in Brazil.
