dartonman
Last day of second shotgun season (yesterday)....went out early afternoon and met with the farmer......he had a game plan for me and my son.......we were to walk his wooded pasture/creek bottom......one start at one country road, the other start at the opposite country road....about 850 yards apart.....each stay on their side of the creek, and walk to eachother......farmer told us there were quite a few deer hiding in the creek bed. Ten minutes into the hunt, I observe several young does bust cover, and haul it to the next county......it was then I noticed her.....the old large body was definately an experienced animal....she had her head down, and was heading toward me slowly, and methodically, looking back in my sons direction every few steps.....she was so calm and sneaky, it was an honor to watch her.....she closed the distance between me and her, I then caught the blaze orange cap and vest of my son...150 yards to her right, and slowly walking toward me.....the doe turned broadside, in one small open patch, and thats when I shot her. The slug dropped her in her tracks, a high spine shot, followed up immediately to a head shot. I cant allow her to suffer, she was an honorable adversary. My son arrived, and was extremely pleased we finally had meat for the freezer. We took her to the check station, and her lower jaw was removed, and charted......she was over 7 + years old. This will probably be the oldest deer I ever harvested.....I would est. her live weight somewhere near 170 pounds......she was huge. God Bless gang. \(no pics) too graphic, as the check station sliced her head open for a brain sample as I live in a CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease ) county. al

Bowtech_archer07
Check Station?? Where do they still have those Dartonman? Is it in CWD zones or what? I thought IL was all automated now? Just curious;) Congrats on a great doe. That would have been cool to see her sneaking through the brush away from your son. Old deer really are a pleasure to watch.
