84 z28
I have an 870 wingmaster currently with a 2 3/4 bird barrel on it. I would like to look into a deer barrel for it. The only slug barrels I find are in 3". Are all 870 model barrels interchangeable and can i use the 3" barrel ?
EKYhunter
The 3" chambered barrel will work, however you won't be able to shoot 3" shells. Hastings makes a slug barrel for the 870 that has the 2 3/4" chamber. Hasting barrels are better than the Remington factory barrel but are more expensive. Hope this helps! colorado bob
84-----Your reciever has an ejector clip that kicks out the empty shell & it's set for 2 3/4" shells. A 3" shell will jam the gun. A gunsmith can reset it. My 870 will only shoot 2 3/4" shells, got a new barrel that will shoot 3" shells----but I still use the 2 3/4". They work. Baby mags kill turkeys as dead as any 3". Most guys use 2 3/4" slugs for deer hunting. The 3" shell has some advantages when it comes to steel shot for geese. For ducks-----2 3/4" work just as well. EKYhunter
care to tell me why i cant use 3" shells just so I know for future reference. And is there any way to make the gun capable of switching to 3" shells ? I think Colorado Bob answered that question pretty good. I have always been told that the receiver for the 2/34" guns and 3" guns are different and that the gun will not function properly with the 3" load. I never wanted to test it to see:D Also, Remington says not to use the 3" load on the guns with a 2 3/4" receiver even if you have a 3" barrel and that's good enough for me!
