Illinois BBD Baby Finally

Thats right today was the opener on my muzzleloader season here in Illinois. I sat where I knew a big buck was roaming for the first 2 hours and saw 2 does. I went to the other side of the farm and met up with some buddies who always come in and push the area at the last of the season.

The first push yielded nothing so we went to where I had been sitting waiting on the old strip mine haulage road in the morning. The plan was one guy would walk around and push the timber bottoms towards our food plot and I would wait above on the old haulage road. I was the only one who had boots tall enough to make it across the creek and get set up for the long shot.

I knew my TC Pro Hunter could easily make a 200 yard shot and got the trees around the haulage road ranged for distance and sat down to wait for the "dog" ie: Chad to start the push.

I sat about 10 minutes before I looked down the edge of the road and spotted antlers in the edge of the brush. He had his head and front leg exposed and nothing else. I could tell by his heads and ears up attittude he was ready to bolt any minute. So I settled the scope in on him at 175 yards right on the neck and slowly squeezed.

BOOM and I thought I saw him hit the ground in the brush, but I stayed seated at the end of the grass road waiting on the pusher to come through. 15 minutes later he stepped out and said I had shot before he ever entered the timber. His scent had blown in the timber and this guy was getting the heak out of dodge.

He id a typical 10 point with tons of mass, I guess him at 5 1/2 years old but will probably have him tooth aged. Sorry for the long post but he is my second best buck and it was a really long season of passing deer! I thought I would shoot another doe today and be done.

Boy was I wrong!
