Turkeygirl
Well got up and went back this morning. Sat in my blind for like an hour, didn't see anything, although plenty of deer tracks since last night. when it was fully light, got on what I thought were the tracks, didn't find anything. Went back to where she'd bedded down and thought maybe sheb ack tracked and went across the old track into the woods in the middle. Well she did, found somespecks of blood. Followed the trail across the back side of the track and into the woods behind the maintence buildings. Kind of lost the track but new she must have headed into the pines, so I started walking through the pines. Didn't have much luck till I went back out and started up the hill on the outside of the pines and soon saw blood. Went in and found where she'd bled decently into several beds, then I see he get up and run up the hill. Her last bed didn't have quiet as much blood in it but considering what I thought was alot, maybe she wasn't that weak. Well I tracked all over in the state land....into 2 overgrown clear cuts which was horrible, jumped her there but couldn't get my release on the loop fast enough. Tracked her to the west then she turned and went across the ridge to the east. Saw her bedded but she jumped and ran. Finally I came within 15 yards of her bedded between 2 fallen trees. I had a shot, but she was angled away from me with her head curled looking at me. I hesitated because I didn't like the shot angle and didn't want to wound her again. I stepped forward to try and get her up, and up she got and wasn't going to just fling an arrow at a running deer. Still is bleeding a little bit, enough to me to keep tracking her. Saw her bedded again under a pine, but she faced right towards me so at 40 yards she was gone again. She finally ran into private property across a field and I gave up. this was several miles later, no joke, at least 3 miles I'd say, so in total, to walk back I probably put in 5 or 6 miles. Maybe I should have taken that one shot....but there were too many ifs for me.Hopefully she'll heal up or a muzzleloader guy will get her, otherwise she'll be a meal for all the coyote tracks I saw. I gave it my all, wished it would have ended with a tagged deer. I feel the hike now and basically got home, showered, and passed out in my bed for an hour and a half. Broke a different fiber optic on my sight.....does anyone know how to get replacemet Fitz fibers? I'll be back out again tomorrow evening and Tuesday evening, may go out in the morning here at home maybe...
Straight Shooter
You gave it your all Ruth and that is great. I know it stinks to lose a deer but it sounds like she'll make it if she makes it through the winter. As for your fibers, there is a place in California that sells replacement fibers. When I can get he link I'll send to you.
Illinois59
Sounds like you gave it your all. I hope the season hold better things for you.
fly
Many hunters wouldn't have put that much effort into tracking a doe. It's good to know there are ethical hunters out there. An ethical hunter (huntress) = an ethical nurse. Well done. Hey I just noticed I got some new head gear. I'm a 10-pointer now!

LifeNRA
I believe Fitz Fiber is out of business. The web site says the on-line store is closed. http://www.fitzfiber.com/
GWSmith
Good Efforts dont always have the desired outcomes:( You did what you could...sometimes that's got to be enough. If you remember half of the stuff you were able to see during the tracking and sightings of this deer the effort wont go to waste. Stuff like what the beds looked like, where the blood was in those beds, where the deer decided was a safe place for it to bed down in, how far the deer ran after being jumped up each time, etc. etc.
