Rifle/Scope Choices

I'm looking for some insight and opinion on which type of rifle and scope will best suit the area that I hunt.

I live in Maryland and the area that hunt is very flat. I will be using the rifle for whitetail deer only, hunting out of a treestand over a field. My longest shot would be 365 yds and most shots would be 150-250 yds.

I am a longtime bow and shotgun hunter but recently got some property to hunt in a county where rifles are allowed:D. I have never owned a rifle a don't know a whole lot about them.

Any information/opinions would be great. Thanks.:o

I would suggest a 30-06 or 270 in bolt action, I have a Ruger bolt action 30-06 with a Nikon 3-9x50 scope. I also have a Remington 3600 pump action in 30-06 that I use when we do deer drives so I can get a faster second and third shot if needed, that gun has a Bushnell 3-9x40 scope. I hunt mostly in Garrett county and western Allegany county where most of my shots are 100 yards or less, for longer shots I would suggest the 270 over the 30-06.

Kind of partial to the remington model 700's here, but there are a lot of good options in rifles. Really depends on how much you want to spend.

Lots of good options on calibers too, for deer to that distance a .270 should work just fine. A lot of versatility with the .30-06 and .308 too and they should also be fine at those ranges.

Scopes really depend on what you want to spend. For the money, the nikon monarch line is hard to beat.

Zeis conquest, Leupold

Both of these you can't go wrong with. JMO

They would be powerful enough for the longer shot and do well on the 100 yard to 200 yard range.

Another vote for the .270 w/ Leupold on a Tikka T3 Lite ,guaranteed accuracy , pleasant to carry, minimal recoil, adjustable trigger, and it won't break the bank.

2nd choice would be the Weatherby Vanguard in a .270 this another quality inexpensive rifle with guaranteed accuracy that will get the job done.

It's all up to you, get out and kick some tires and see what feels best to you. Good luck.
