Gator
Did some scouting last weekend around a wheat field I have seen some deer in. The North side of it was not disced/planted this year, just a small part to the east. While walking bthis, I found pile upon pile of deer poo. My question is this a sign of a feeding area or a bedding area? I have heard both, so I am kinda confused on what it all means
Doe-ee
I'd say it's a deer pooping area :D:D:D:D

Tominator
Definitely in the area Jason, as far as bedding, you should be able to see their beds I would think.

Texan_Til_I_Die
My observation has been that a scattering of individual pellets indicates a feeding (or travel, or whatever) area, and pellets that are clumped together into larger balls indicate a bedding area. The pellets will be clumped due to the deer laying down for extended periods.
Tominator
Hello, Mr. Obvious? :D That was my nice way of saying "hellooooo, can't you see the beds?"
Gator
That was my nice way of saying "hellooooo, can't you see the beds?" That just it, I don't see any beds in this area, but the pellets are all grouped together, and not spread out
MCH
That just it, I don't see any beds in this area, but the pellets are all grouped together, and not spread out I'd taste them...if they taste bad, you're probably near a feeding area. Hope this helps!!
okiedog
I'd taste them...if they taste bad, you're probably near a feeding area. Hope this helps!! bigbuck145
I've seen them clumped where i know for a fact it was a feeding area.
huntermq32
Deer will poop were the eat and in or near the bedding area. So if you aren't seeing any beds then they are feeding there more than likely. This time of year they will bed closer to where they will be feeding if they can. fly
I'd say could be either. I've seen piles at feeding and bedding locations. Not seeing the beds would make one believe a feeding area.
ruttinbuc
One thing for sure, there are deer in the area...
The_Kat
Well growing up on a sheep farm and seeing lotsa sheep poo, I'd say theres no way of telling what a deer is using the area for. Obviously if it's spread out the animal was moving at the time the pellets were deposited. But just cause it is clumped doesn't mean it was laying down or stationary. Lambs and deer are very much alike in the bowel movements, and I have seen lambs drop clumpy droppings while moving too. Now in my opinion, being as the area is a wheatfield, I'd say it's a feeding area....the area outside the field is more than like a staging area that they filter in and out of waiting for nightfall to come out and eat. Hope this helps....
johnf
I would think that clumping would also mean that there is more moisture in the poop so it sticks together more. They could very well be on the move in such a case.
Illinois59
This thread stinks! Could you set up a stand and watch the area for activity?
HUNTINGMAN
The best way to find out is get in there early and hunt it.I would say feeding area though.
bowhunterman1
Id say sit and scout or watch it closely with a trail camera or from the other side of the wheat field.

Flintlock1776
I say feeder. They will nail the trails and go anyplace but if you see a look that is usually a doe group and they are feeding there or nearby. There could be a buckwith them but from what I have been seeing in this part of the season the does are herded up again. Even some button bucksand little spikes in there with them. Yesterday I had a big 10 point in there but he did not show up again today:(
