fly
I'm having a chest mount completed on the buck I took this season. I asked the taxidermist to save the skull of my deer this year so i could have the teeth examined to determine the age. I'd like to keep the jaw bones (perhaps the whole skull minus the antlers would be easier)? I'm picking up the skull tomorrow (frozen) and was wondering what you all would recommend? I'd rather not use the beatles I've heard of, boiling sounds like the way to go? Is there a solution that is needed or will plain old water work fine? About how long would I anticipate letting it boil? Thanks, Frank
RTF
Let it simmer (not boil) in a solution of water and washing soda which is made by Arm & Hamor and can be bought in the laundry detergent isle of Wal-Mart. During intervals of the simmer pieces of meat will begin to come off. You will need to remove this meat to speed up the process. Before simmering remove the brains and eyes. FYI do this project in a garage or outside. It will be messy and will stink up the area you are working in.
Gator
How do you get the brain out before hand?
fly
Thanks RTF. The taxidermist has already removed the antlers and a section of the skull which opens up the cranial vault. The brain will come out easy for my case.
Hoosierbuck
To evacuate the cranium I use a wire hanger made into a loop and insert through the spinal cord hole and jumble it until it's goo then just use the hanger to pull out the gobs. Adjam5
I think the lower jaw is what is needed to age the deer. Check this out... https://www.qdma.com/store/details.asp?id=4&catid=4&catname=Management%20Tools and this https://www.qdma.com/store/details.asp?id=157&catid=4&catname=Management%20Tools and this https://www.qdma.com/store/details.asp?id=231&catid=4&catname=Management%20Tools I hope this is helpful. fly
Thanks to all for the helpful tips. That deer aging teeth tool is pretty cool. I see it is on sale in the bargain cave at Cabela's for 24.99. Too bad I didn't see it earlier (would be a great Christmas present).
