fly
I've heard to use tape over the end of the ML barrel to keep out moisture. What type of tape have you had success with? Keeps out moisture and doesn't come off. Thanks Frank
hangunnr
Plain old electrical tape works well. One layer across the muzzle then wrap the tag ends a couple times. One word of caution though when using tape on the muzzle. If you don't shoot your gun at the end of the day be sure to remove the tape so the barrel can breath. hangunnr
Buzz
Never used tape. Sat in my stand opening day in my waders and water proof coat in the rain. When it was time to shoot the gun went off. We had this discussion here, or maybe it was another board, years ago and some said they had seen or read where they stuck a loaded MZ underwater and it went off. With a well fitting sabot and a cap on the nipple I'm not sure how much better the charge could be protected. On the other hand tape is cheap so if it helps your peace of mind..... PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I have used electrical tape, masking tape, duct tape, cling wrap, aluminum foil and recall once I used a band aid. I use tape not so much to protect the powder but to keep any water out of the barrel. Water cannot be compressed so I always wondered what happened if some had collected on top of the bullet and then was shot.
wtnhunt
Never tried it, but would think a cheap water balloon would work just as well. Would not potentially leave any gummy residue on your gun to have to clean off later either.
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
To add to my list of things used to cover my barrel in bad weather I have used balloons and even the fingers cut from those yellow rubber gloves the gals use to do dishes. I just had the wife save those that got a hole and leaked and I cut out the fingers. NOTE: cutting a glove that the wife still uses is not the way to go. Lol. I carry a couple of small rubber bands to hold the things that fit loose around the barrel.
Guest Swampman
It's unnecessary the water will leave the barrel before the bullet does. How do you guys blood trail in the pouring rain?
Swamphunter
It's unnecessary the water will leave the barrel before the bullet does. How do you guys blood trail in the pouring rain? I agree with him that there is no need to cover the end of the barrel when rainingbarring maybe if you carry the gun barrel up in pouring rain. When raining, I always carry barrel down, and don't sweat the wet. As for as far as blood trailing in the rain...are you saying that you won't hunt/shoot a deer in the rain? Hunted most all day in zero degree temps the day this pic was taken (last day of hunting season)....gun went off just fine at the end of the night. I had carried the gun upright on my shoulder, and had also had it sitting barrel up, buttstock on the ground for a bit, and never concerned myself with it that much. Always kind of figured the sabot prevent a minor amount of water from getting to the powder.
Flintlock1776
I use a black balloon, small type you can get for kids birthdays. I would be concerned about tape being too tight. Balloon wont hold up to a hot shot coming out;)
Guest Swampman
When I was young, I hunted in the pouring rain many times. I like to think I'm wiser now. I do know a blood trail won't last long in the rain. The tape (or the ballon) will be blown off well before the bullet gets to it.

I understand your concern Swampman, but with busy lives and short seasons, some people can only hunt a certain amount of days and thats that. Have to hunt rain or shine. I try to not hunt on days when I know it is going to be a steady rain, but a day with sprinkles or showers, I am still in the woods.
fly
I was bow hunting in the rain tonight. All I got was wet. The 2 deer I shot with my bow this year did not produce a blood trail so it didn't matter if it was raining or not. I harvested them both within 150 yards of the shot the next morning. The nights were cold so the meat was fine. I like the idea of the little balloons. Thanks for all the comments.
Adjam5
I am a fan of tape. Good tape. Like Scotch 3M 33+ or Scotch 3M 88. It leaves no tape glue behind when removed sticks in cold weather. The lands and grooves can been seen on the tape at the muzzle after firing. It did not effect my accuracy. I did this at the range to make sure I wasn't hurting myself. Sure the gun most always will go bang without tape, but I KNOW that snow or water could not get down the barrel and no what ifs come into play with when hunting with my MLer. A metallic cartridge I would never worry. Just the simple fact of how the gun goes bang and how detrimental water is to ignition...it is my piece of mind.
