Doc
I was watching a TV program this morning that showed a guy shooting at a hog. He missed so badly (short) that the arrow skipped off the dirt and stuck the pig, killing it right on the spot. Doc
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I watched that the other day. Pretty crazy, and definitely lucky, it bounced off the ground and hit the hog perfectly. My uncle did that once but at a target. He had just picked up his crossbow and a few of us got together to shoot. He shot, it hit the ground and skipped up, right into the center circle on the block target we were shooting at. I guess sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.:D
backwoods07
That's pretty crazy. I saw something similar on a tv show. A dad and his young daughter were hunting rabbits with a small caliber rifle. You could see the dust kick up about two feeet in front of the rabbit and the rabbit just fell over. I didn't think that was possible
Tominator
That is pretty lucky. Couple years ago I had a student bring in a video he took of his buddy hunting late season. Decent 8 pointer comes close to their blind (within 30 yards or so). Kid shoots and misses badly (short). Buck stands there, flag goes up and he runs out, appearing to go at least another 30 yards farther stops, turns, snorts, looks back stomping his foot. Kid reloads his crossbow, shoots again. The shot is way short again, but this time the bolt skips off the snow, buck ducks to run, bolt catches the buck in the neck cutting the carotid artery, buck dies within 100 yards. I had to watch the vid frame by frame to believe it. Couldn't believe the buck ducked right into that bolt.
arrow32
That is awesome and lucky all at the same time. If I did that I'd end up gutting the dang thing and tracking it clear across the county.
Doc
I too had a super lucky episode about 10 years ago. I had a ground stand with 3 shooting lanes cut. the area was super thick brush and visibility was confined to just what you could see in the shooting lanes. A nice buck came in and was milling around about 20 yards out and even got into a nice broadside position for me. I let go and watched the arrow heading straight for the boiler room. right at the very end of the shot, the arrow clearly deflected off something and slipped sideways and went flying way off to the side. It looked like a perfectly clean miss. In fact I was so convinced that I saw the arrow miss that I stayed for another 1/2 hour without even going out to get my arrow. When I finally went out to get my arrow and go home, I reached down and saw all kinds of blood along the entire length of the shaft. While I was standing there staring at the arrow trying to figure out what had happened, a motion caught my eye off to the side. I was completely shocked when I saw a buck head slowly rise out of the goldenrod. Then I could clearly make out the body of the bedded buck only 15 yards away. Well then things got a little crazy. I quickly fired another arrow, but was so completely overtaken by the most severe case of buck fever I have ever experienced, that even at 15 yards I completely missed the shot. I mean COMPLETELY! Then I saw the buck slowly get to its feet in a real wobbly fashion and start to run over the rise and out of sight. He was running like he was drunk, weaving from side to side and once even almost going over backward, but away he went right out of sight. I went over to where he was laying and found a huge clot and puddle of dark blood. A lot of it too. After about another 1/2 hour, I began trailing. I probably should have waited a lot longer, but I was so screwed up, I really wasn't thinking anywhere near as clearly as I should have been. Well, even though the trail was not very distinct, I did eventually find him about 100 yards farther down the hill. Sure enough there was a couple of bloody holes in the throat where the deflected arrow's path moved from a perfect double lung path to a new trajectory that sliced the artery (or vein) in the neck. It was quite a deadly shot (eventually), but I had no clue that I had even touched him. In fact I had already written that one off as a case of "I should have cleared out that shooting lane better". Well, that one lone episode of fantastic luck made up for some of the many times before and since, when luck worked just the opposite for me.
