MCH
Wow. Was looking like Boston or the Angels had the inside route. And now, the Angels have came out saying that they will NOT sign Manny. The market is thinning out for Ramirez.

toddyboman
I'm starting to hate baseball. The money these teams NOT just the Yankees but all teams are paying and tossing around it stupid!!:mad: $400,000,000 is what the Yankees have spent in payroll over the last few months........That is absolutely ridicules. MCH
8 years, 180 mil...or at least that's what is being reported.:wow
VABuckSlayer
The Yankees don't mind spending the money that's for sure. They dumped a lot of payroll though to do what they're doing. Man they SHOULD be good next year!
Guest Finn
For the life of me, I don't understand why the owners don't adopt a salary cap like the NFL has so this crap doesn't happen. The NFL is so popular because you never know who's going to make the playoffs.....everyone is on an equal field to start. Getting to hate major league baseball. c_lou
What makes this even better is they spend $400 million on payroll, but then ask the taxpayer making 50k to finance a stadium that they will never be able to afford to go to.:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
MCH
Just saw the luxury tax numbers. Its ridiculous. Only the Yankees and the Tigers had to pay luxury tax. Since the onset of luxury tax, the Yanks have paid over 90% of the total taxed.
Gator
Still goes to show money can't buy success! Look at several years ago, they had the HIGHEST paid salary, and got beat by the Devil Rays in the WS, think it was, and they had the LOWEST paid salary. Poetic Justice. Look at this year, didn't even make the PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
muggs
For the life of me, I don't understand why the owners don't adopt a salary cap like the NFL has so this crap doesn't happen. Because the Yankees (and other big money clubs- but mostly the Yankees) control the league, Craig. That's really what it boils down to. The big money clubs also dish out huge money to the smaller clubs through "revenue sharing" which basically means the Yankees and big money teams shell out huge dollars to the smaller clubs after each season. Without that money, a lot of the smaller wouldn't make a profit. So, the smaller clubs really don't have a choice. They make their profits off of the Yankess- so what can they say to stop the Yankees from spending? Nothing. That's also why we see Selig getting extensions every time his contract is up. He's a puppet for the Owners. It's obvious he's not doing anything to fix the league, but the Owners don't care about the league, they just care about their bottomline. Eventually though, I think their greed will end up biting them in the rear because I'm sure about 90% of the country feels like we all do...just not as big into baseball anymore. Just like with all things, $$ talks. It's ruining baseball for sure. I hope the Rays work them. Actually, I hope the league folds and the NHL takes over. MCH
There's an old rule that states "Teams cannot sign more than 3 Type A free agents per year". The only problem with this rule is that teams can bypass it if they lose type A free agents that year. In other words, the Yanks are free to sign at least 2 more type A free agents. Anyone want to lay money on Manny going to the Yanks???
muggs
Anyone want to lay money on Manny going to the Yanks??? They have to be the odds on favor at this point. That will make me sick.
VABuckSlayer
I'm a Yankee fan and I don't want ManRam! I used to play some ball and I believe in hussling out infield hits and playing the game right! He's an awesome talent but I don't care for the way he plays ball! I'm sure we'll pick him up though. I heard they offered him a 3 year deal.
rhine16
Tex is DEFINITELY not worth signing to an 8 year contract, much less for the money they are giving him. He's just not that good....
NY_Bowhunter14
as long as signing Tex will keep Manny outta NY, then i will take it... no way they sign Manny now...

Adjam5
Just how deep are Steinbrenner's pockets? The world may never know..... Remember...Steinbrenners just dabble in baseball, they make their real money building ships.
buckbuster11
LOL...Tex is barely worth $80 million let alone $180 million. It should be illegal what these morons in the Yankee front office are doing. If they want to blow all their money that's one thing, but if they are going ink a bunch of guys to record contracts while asking taxpayers to fund their stadium because they don't have the money that's insane. Bunch of criminals. Edited December 26, 2008 by buckbuster11
ruttinbuc
It is obscene..that is what it is. The working class is taking it on the chin and we are supposed to support this crap? Don't give me they are selling a product stuff either. The ultimate slap in the face to baseball was at the all star game last year. They had past hall of fame players at every position who made the game and played for peanuts being joined by a current player who made more in a short time than all of them in theirs combined....Sickening:mad::mad::mad: Edited December 26, 2008 by ruttinbuc
