Cajun-101
Shot at a 10 point with about 19” inside spread this weekend. I was in a cypress bottom in about knee deep water. The shot was about 120 yards & it looked like a good hit. I never shot a deer in water & was wondering will the blood stay around or float? Never tracked in the water, but it was tough. Never found the deer. I was sick!
wtnhunt
Man that is a shame you lost the deer. With the river bottom and a lot of water around us, I have had concerns about tracking or finding deer in water. Look forward to seeing some of the responses here. Texan_Til_I_Die
I can't imagine that there would be any type of noticeable blood trail, even in totally calm water. I've seen what happens when dye gets dropped into a lake and it disperses really fast. Too bad about losing the buck.
VermontHunter
Blood will generally diffuse and dissipate in water, just the movement of you trying to track a blood trail in water would stir it up to an extent that it would diffuse even that much quicker .. Straight Shooter
Sorry to hear about the lost deer. I don't guess you've ever tried to track a deer in the rain. Water and blood just don't go together, a good shoulder shot will drop them in their tracks and is recommended if it's standing in a large swamp. Cajun-101
Thanks Fellas I will be heading back this weekend hopefully I can look for buzzards or smell it. At least I can recover the horns & make an european mount.
arrow32
Hate to hear that you lost a good buck. Hope you are able to atleast get the horns off of it this weekend.
Turkeygirl
Well hopefully you learned from this experience and won't try it again... Water and blood is not like water and oil, that's for sure....

m gardner
I've hunted alot in the swamps of the northeast and what you will find is lots of hair floating on the water where you shot if you hit him and by studying the hair you can determine where you hit. The last one I tracked for my brother in law went a half mile and we followed the tracks you could see under the water in the bottom. If nothing else get a direction of travel and get some friends to fan out. We found him on a little hummock, dead. Good luck. Mark

Zambo
Just wondering if you found any blood at all? Was there any on vegetation or plants ? I have never seen a cypress bottom so I don't know if you can see tracks on the bottom or not. Must be the worst tracking conditions I have ever heard of. Good luck. The only thing tougher to track would have to be a fish.
Cajun-101
Well went back this weekend & my neighbor came over to the camp. I had heard a shot come from that way about 5 or 10 min. after my shot. But it never accured to me he was shooting at the same deer. low & behold it was he showed me the pictures 10 point 22in inside 240 # I made a bad shot he would have never stopped running & much less i could not find blood. That is the tripod in the back & I am standing where the deer was. Edited December 29, 2008 by Cajun-
pendog
Cajun sorry about the not getting the buck, that happened to my best friend this year in PA. He hit a great buck only to have it run to another guy that drilled it. Atleast the buck was not wasted.
hoosierhunter
that was actually a cool question b/c I never thought about that if your hunting is a really swampy area and a blood trail......
Turkeygirl
Sorry to hear you didn't get him and someone else did, but at least you know he wasn't running around wounded and suffering or dying later on and not being found. You'll get more chances at deer.
fly
Glad to hear the deer was harvested. Sorry it wasn't you. I couldn't see any images.
