Tink
Last night as I was returnign from my lease i sw a deer cross up ahead and slowed dow Sure enough a herd of axis deer crossed the road enmass and I never took my foot off of the brakes my 90 GMC Suburban went right thru the middkle and I herd two thumps. When I stopped and turned around there was only one doe on the road TG. She had a broken back and was kicking so I quickly killed her and dragged her off out of traffic. Waste of good venison. My Ranch Hand Grill guard and light were undamaged TG Its a sight I never want to see again. The gonzo dude at the Car wash had removed my deer whistles and the deer didnt hear me coming Texas law prohibits picking up road kill deer. bad law. fly
That's too bad Tink. In IL we can pick up road kill deer, but can't finish it off if it isn't dead yet. A cop has to do it. That's a strange law as well, but perhaps they are trying to save a person from injury. It's been around a while now, but some years ago I heard a sound clip of a guy calling 911 after deer came alive in his car. I believe he was in a telephone booth. If anyone has a URL to that clip I'd love to hear it again.
JamesVee
It can't be the fault of the guy who was driving the truck!? Blame it on the "gonzo" at the carwash. That's hilarious.

Tominator
Texas has free ranging axis deer? Never knew that. That is a bad law that you can't pick up roadkill. Tons of venison gets wasted every year.

Adjam5
Glad your alright Tink. When I was down there in Kerrville( Rhodes Taxi) last March, I inquired about the massive grill guards on everyone had on their truck. Then it was explained that you could hit a deer moving good and not worry about totaling your truck or even stopping. It happens often in the Hill country I am told. What is the speed limit on 10? Like 75mph night 85mph day? Right? No small secret why you need those grill guards.

Its not a matter of if your going to hit a deer but when Part of Kerr Co have 800 deer per sq miles but they are small WT and large Axis deer Tink
Shutter
dayum.. too bad about the wasted axis Tink. The law is backwards, it should be a crime to allow such good venison to go to waste on the side of the road! I'm looking for an axis hunt for me and my wife, you familiar with any exotic guides in Kerr county?

Actually, as long as you call the local State Police, 99% of the time, they'll tell you to finish it off if injuries appear to be life threatening. I've personally ended a few deer's suffering with a knife without making a phone call. I don't need official word to do what's humane no matter the risk. I just won't let an animal suffer. I was just in that part of Texas 2 weeks ago headed to Conroe, TX. Not used to seeing that many dead deer on the side of the road in such a seemingly unlikely habitat for deer. I know better now.
