fly
This is likely the highest scoring buck I've taken to date.He only weighed 175 lbs. field dressed, but then I harvested him in mid-January (2008) so he may have been rutting hard and lost a lot of weight. The taxidermist thought he was at least 5.5 years old. I didn't think to have him save the teeth (dumb move on my part). After I filled out the paperwork the taxi indicated his prices went up to $485.00! I really like the mount, but have found a new reputable taxi that charges $350.00. I'm having him do my big 8 from this year. So what do you all think of my high dollar 11-pointer?
craig mack
Awesome mount, congrats!!!! I'm paying $495 for my shoulder mount so dont feel ripped off. You get what you pay for. I hope that the guy charging 350 is as good as the guy charging 485.

fly
Thanks everyone. Great deer. I would have thought you would've settled on a price before he took the head? Yea I learned a lesson for sure. I took my 06 buck to the same taxidermist and his price was about $385.00. I picked up the finished mount in Oct. 2007 and paid off the balance. He never mentioned his prices were going up. Just 3 months later (January of 2008) I assumed the price would be the same or close to $385.00. I never would have thought his prices would go up 100 dollars. I now know to do three things: 1. Ask what the price is regardless of previous prices. 2. Ask for the skull (age determination). 3. Ask for the antlers until the taxi needs them. (I have heard of taxidermist shops being broke into and the thief taking the antlers). In addition I don't have to wait a year to find out the official score.
Zambo
Awsome deer. Regardless of the price as long as it looks great when finished and was done with quality skills and materials I would pay what ever the rate was to get my trophy on the wall. I'l bet your glad he's on your wall. He's a stud.

pointing_dogs_rule
First of all, very nice deer and nice mount. We have quite a few taxi guys in our area. Quality is number 1 priority. One guy is at $450 and another is at $325 for shoulder mounts. Both do very good work. Lots of other guys in between those prices. The one person at 450 is slow and the mount mat take until fall due to the high volume. The guy at 325 only does 25 per year and you usually get it back by April. As a result I go with the cheaper guy with a faster turn-a-round and just as quality work. In the end it pays to ask all those questions that you mentioned (including return time). I also look at a guys work before deciding to give him the work. Good luck to all the dog

craig mack
looks good but geez $485? the taxi know does heads for $175 No offense, but I dont think there is a "quality" Taxidermist out there that would charge so cheap of a price. I doubt that for $175 you get quality work.

wtnhunt
Great looking mount and buck Frank. Congratulations. Don't know what the taxidermist we have used is charging now if he is even still working. Would be sure to ask the guy charging $350 as many questions as you can, and look close at his work.
