I'm new to the site and I love upland bird hunting. Pheasants, chuckars, and grouse mostly. I have a 1 year old weimer pup and only took her out once last year. I've been working her with a wing and dummy, but does anyone have any suggestions of what else I can do to get her ready for her first real year of hunting?

(some pics from her 1st hunt)

Re: My weimeraner pup

Welcome to our forums grin.gif That is a great looking dog. I hunt grouse also, and have a 4+ month old chocolate lab I plan to hunt with. Right now I'm getting her used to loud noises(guns), and

using her nose with some bird scents.I use training dummies I can put my bird scent on and makes trails in the woods she can smell and look for.Your dog is much older, so should be able to be a good hunting dog this fall. Keep us posted on how you do.

Re: My weimeraner pup

it's been my experience that if they're hunters, they'll hunt. some dogs just aren't worth a plugged nickel. the most important thing i think is to get dogs from hunting, not show stock.

that said, i've been pretty lucky with dogs i've hunted with. some have had marginal noses, some have been marginal behaviorally. the best dog i've ever had now belongs to Nut. Jake had the best nose i've ever seen in a dog. it was just too bad (in a way) i got too interested in bowhunting and didn't have the time to train him the way he should have been trained.

good luck with your pup.

Re: My weimeraner pup

Beautiful pup and great pics!!! I currently have a 5 month old black lab that I'm training for waterfowl hunting. I use the techniques in Richard Wolter's Water Dog book as a training guide. It is a great book and I've recommended it to several people. You may want to read Gun Dog to get some really great info on training dogs for upland hunting.

Oh btw...welcome to the forums!

great lookin pup there andy, looked like a good hunt as well, the biggest thing with my setter is just getting here out and working some cover year around, let the dog realize that she is under your control, eventually she will will look back and know where you are at at all times, a big plus when the pheasents decide to run not hold, master dog relation ship in my opinion is the best training you can do for succses. great lookin pup
