Marinelli out in Detroit after 0-16 season.

The Lions became the first team in NFL history to finish 0-16 with a 31-21 loss to Green Bay on Sunday. They have lost 17 straight dating back to last season and now must wait nine months for another chance to avoid the slow climb closer to the 26-game losing streak the expansion Buccaneers reached by 1977. And they will go forward with a new coach.

Despite all the losses, the Lions' season never really devolved into finger-pointing. But Marinelli knows the record is the only thing that really matters.

Marinelli did not discuss his iffy future after Sunday's game. He has gone 10-38 in three seasons and his fate had not been announced, but team owner William Clay Ford has decided the leaders of the front office, Martin Mayhew and Tom Lewand, will be back in some capacity.

"The Fords will deal with it and the players will roll with it," said tackle Jeff Backus, who has been with the team through former general manager Matt Millen's era, which began in 2001 and ended earlier this year.

Marinelli was hired by the Lions in 2006 after serving 10 seasons as a defensive assistant in Tampa bay. He was the fourth head coach of Millen's eight-year tenure running the Lions.

The Lions also fired their defensive staff and everyone on the offensive staff except running backs coach Sam Gash and wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson.

I won't say the new GM and president are going to turn this team around. But no one can be as bad as Millen. He single handedly ran this team into the ground. They weren't the greatest team before, but at least they were sniffing the playoffs back then and occasionally making it to the postseason. We'll see what the future holds, but I guarantee it won't be as bad as it is now.

Yeah, Millen was the demise of that franchise. They're pretty lean now, not a whole lot of talent there. They need to get this pick right, that's for sure.

They'll take a QB. I just don't know if Stafford or Bradford should be that guy.

After that, they need to address their Oline...until they do that they won't be able to compete.

Yep, QB and O-line should be their first priority. They have some talent, but they are at positions that, in order to utilize that talent, they need players at other positions to be solid as well. I think they have a pretty good RB in Kevin Smith, and a good group of WRs, but they can't block for themselves or throw it to themselves.

The next thing they need to work on is defensive backs. In all my years following college or pro football, I don't think I have ever seen a team get burned so many times on 3rd and long. Even on third and more that 10 or 15, all the other team had to do was send someone across the middle and it was a sure first down and that even with them getting good pressure on the QB.

Actually Lou, I'm liking the way you're thinking.

How about this scenario Lions fans.

QB= Matt Cassell and they spend their #1 pick on Andre Smith the LT from 'Bama?

Seems like that would be a wise move on their part. Then, spend the rest of your picks on OLineman and defense.

I actually was figuring they would use that pick on him anyways. But add in signing Matt Cassell and I think it is a couple of the best moves they have made in a decade. They still have another first round pick they got from Dallas in the Roy Williams trade too.

That 2nd #1 they should look at that Cody kid from Alabama. Isn't he like 6'4" and 350? Talk about a run-stopper.

Thats what they sould do. I'm against the Lions drafting a QB, they have ruined everyone they have ever drafted. They need to draft O-Line and D-Line, start there and work their way out. But with Brady not recovering well after his surgery the Pats might want to hold on to Cassell for another year.

Yeah, Mt. Cody- he'll be a force on Sundays. That would be a good pick for them too. I

I also like Vontea Davis, that corner for Illinois. Actually, I think Davis and Maulaga from USC (who I want the Browns to take) are two guys that can immediately help a defense.

With out a good D-Line, a young corner is going to get burnt. While I like Davis, I don't think he helps the Lions.

True, but they can add Dlineman through free agency too. Basically they just have to start adding good players. But Cassell/Smith/Cody would be fine with me if I was a Lions fan.

They will pay him if Bradys ability to play in 09 is in doubt.

I really don't see them paying him. Just look at what they did with Dieon Branch, Ty Law, & Asanti Samuel. They didn't pay them and filled in with other bodies. Not unless they sign him and look to trade him. I just don't think they take that gamble.

IMHO, I think they look to sign a cheap FA to play until Brady is ready and let Cassell go.
