Adjam5
I don't know if this is old news for you, but this was in our local paper a few days ago and I thought it might be of interest. These are in waters close to NYC and the surrounding harbors and bays. Buck lobsters only...no does:D...for now. http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2008812240354
RangerClay
Neat story! Thanks for sharing. It makes sense to let the females go. If I remember correctly, I think Lewis has to release females also.
NS whitetail
Neat story! Thanks for sharing. It makes sense to let the females go. If I remember correctly, I think Lewis has to release females also. We allowed to keep both male and females, only have to throw the eggbearing females back. V notching has been done some here, but not on a big scale. We have a measure, any lobster with a body shorter than 3 1/4 inches has to be thrown back. As of now, we have a very healthy lobster stock, however, the lobster industry and scientists are working on things to help keep the stocks this way. stevebeilgard
sorry, but i think that's a pretty silly program and a waste of money. alaska has a good system of returning female crab. you simply have to return all females. if you are caught with a female on board (commercial or sport fishermen) you are fined heavily and may lose your license. so, each crab i catch i check, and we keep only males. if a commercial fisherman unloads a crab with a buyer/processor, the processor must turn him in. sure, they expect a mistake or 2, but they also watch for abuse. this method would work well on the east coast, also. remember, these same lobster fishermen must throw away all lobsters not of proper size. this is just one more thing to check, which the fisherman knows is for his benefit.
