Swamphunter
I am in the market for a 12 ft buddy stand for my son and I. He is not real good at heights, and I want him to be able to spend the summer getting used to climbing up it with my in the yard so we can hunt together this fall. Thats the reason for the 12ft stand as opposed to a 15' or higher. Anyone know of any good stands fitting this bill at a decent price? Closeouts or sales?? Thanks
Guest TennesseeTurkey
Not sure about your Wal-Mart but a few of them still have their stands out for sale and they have I believe to be exzactly what your looking for for maybe 100 bucks. If your wanting him to practice climbing it this summer then this may not work because like i said few of them would still have them, if you were to wait until about a month before next years deer season they should have plenty of them. If not try sportsamns guide....
Flintlock1776
I have the Ameristep "The Choice" 2 man ladder stand. Solid, secure, roomy. It also comes with magnetic leafs to stick on the stand legs and a wrap around blind for the top as well as wraps for the gun rail. I only bow hunt out of it and keeping the rail out of the way has not been an issue. I could not locate them on Cabela nor Bass Pro but maybe some other site will have it. GWSmith
Ken, Consider buying a 16' or higher ladderstand. Lots of good deals out there since they are fairly common. Most of the ladders come in sections anyways so you simply just dont put one of the sections in place. You'll still have the section if you decide to use it later. Flintlock1776
I know mine is under 16' but I forget exactly how high. You don't need a skyscraper I have found. Make sure you use a good safety vest regardless of height. I prefer the Huntter Safety System deal

They don't seem to carry Ameristep with all the features I mentioned but they do carry Rivers Edge (what brand Wal Mart sells too) and some other brands. They don't have any for sale apparently on their web page so likely you may have to go into the store and see if any are marked down. http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/search/index.jsp?sr=1&kw=ladder&origkw=ladder&kwCatId=&view=all
Michiganbowhunter_SQ2
I picked up a 12 foot Ameristep 2-man stand from Wal-mart a few years ago for $99. When I had private land to hunt down here it was my main stand. I also bought some burlap material and wrapped it around the stand, leaving an opening where you climb in, worked pretty good, and helped black the wind a little bit. backwoods07
We have about a half dozen 12 foot buddy stands. We picked all of them up from Menards at the end of the season. On a couple of em, we got in good with the floor manager and had him let us know when there was only one left, so we got the open box price. I don't think we paid more than $80 for any of them. Have fun puttin it up!!! Like Michigan said above me, wrappin it in burlap/camo nettin is the way to go. Throw some turf on the bottom to keep your feet warm. We call these stands the "penthouse" stands

WHISKEYSWAMP
I'd go with a stand with the full platform... would feel much safer for your son. Here's one at Dick's Sporting Goods http://dsp.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/p5156921p275w.jpg
backwoods07
I'd go with a stand with the full platform... would feel much safer for your son. Agreed. And the floor underneath the bench is a cool little place you can hide some of your gear!
