Doc
Yesterday, I finally got my predator hunting videos (3 of them), and a book on varmint hunting from Cabela's. They were interesting, but didn't relate at all to hunting conditions here in the northeast. Everything was absolutely wide open country in South Dakota, Kansas and such places. The average shots were being taken at 200-400 yards. Man, we don't have places where you can even see that far. We have mainly thick hardwoods areas and I'm pretty convinced that coyote (or fox) approaches, reactions and techniques must be different than those wide open stretches The book was kind of the same thing. Aren't there any videos or books that cover eastern varmint hunting? Doc

Huntr104
Re: Northeastern Varmint calling I'm going to give it a try this coming weekend. I'll be picking up my new rifle just for Coyotes. I too am having a hard time finding literature on Coyote hunting. I did see the book in Cabela's that Doc is talking about. Hey Doc how do you like that book from Cabelas? is it worth the $25?
Doc
Re: Northeastern Varmint calling Huntr104- The name of the book was "Successful Predator Hunting" by Michael Schoby. I don't believe it cost $25 though. My opinion is that the whole book was slanted toward western style predator hunting. Most of the information related to unbelievably open land that is nothing like the thick brushy stuff we have here in NY. I also thought that the chapters on fox calling got terribly shorted. There was very little info on the biology, habits or nature of the predators. I guess, in general, I would have been better off saving my money. My feeling on most tapes and books that I have seen is that the author had better be from somewhere that has similar topography, climate and animals as you have or you're probably wasting your money. Calling conditions, techniques are sufficiently different between the two sides of the country so that calling information from one side of the country is only very generally and vaguely similar to what would apply on the other side. I have picked up more relevant information from the two forums that I visit. Doc Doc
