Rayzorp
Just got word, heading north for a three day Spring turkey hunt at a farm. This will be my first real turkey hunt. Almost guaranteed a nice tom. I'll pick up some decoys in a few weeks, since this is my first hunt, not going to go crazy on accessories, but I do have one question. If I am lucky enough to shoot a nice tom, the bird I'll donate, but I would like to mount the fan and beard feathers. Is there anything I need to do? I saw some nice mounting kits that would look perfect in my home office. Many thanks ahead of time!! Ray
Guest TennesseeTurkey
Not sure if you have a vest with a flip down seat but if you don't have one thats my bit of advice...
bluelund79
They do make some kits to help you out, just make sure it comes with the preservative so your mount doesn't stink in a month or so. I haven't helped my dad so any taxidermy in quite some time due to my current career, but we are going to be doing my tail fan/beard/and spurs mount this weekend. I'll post some pics after Sunday of before and afters down the road. I will look at the mounting kit I got, the best way to describe it is that it has the fake bird head/bust with a holder for the fan and beard, and on the backboard it has some brass hooks for the feet/spurs. Going to leave the tag on mine, just to make it a little different, and in case any state that I move to has any dumb laws that I wouldn't know about....Eric

fly
Cool,, I read about some of the kicks,, might be something outside my skill set. Bring on the pics!!! Posted this earlier announcing my new "Man Room" Notice the fan on the wall. I know nothing about taxidermy and I did that by following the instructions from a 30-40 dollar kit from Cabelas. Came with the wood plaque. Very easy to do! I'm not knocking the taxidermists here but this is a do it yourselfer. Borax was what I rubbed the skin with. It never has smelled after 2-3 years now. I like it just as much as my first one that I had a taxidermist do for me for tripple the cost.

EKYhunter
Good luck on that "Almost guarenteed nice tom." Remember, Murphy's law applies to turkey hunting even more so than deer hunting.

TuffnufOutdoors
A guarentee. I hope you don't get disappointed. I traveled all the way to Texas from Indiana for one of those last year. Guess what? I will be going back to Texas to get that Rio. But one thing about it. You will love it no matter what. Turkey hunting rocks!
