Re: ontario bears

Hopefully you did your research. There are a lot of great operators in ontario, but i hear some horror stories. In august the bugs may be pretty bad, and the weather could be anything from highs in the 50's to highs in the 90's. As far and the hunt itself it all depends on where you are and what the terrain is like. Chances are you will be within 15 to 20 yards of the bait. Just make a good shot and a bear won't go far.

Re: ontario bears

If I can say anything it will be this. Practice like mad!!! Buy a 3d bear and shoot it like crazy this summer. Do not shoot the bear in the shoulder. Having a bear 10-15 yards from your tree is a whole different thing than a deer. I love bear hunting. I am going in August also. Your going to have a great time if your outfitter is a good. Looking forward to seeing your pics already. Bring bug proof clothing for sure.I wear a couple layers of regular clothes and wear a head net. That makes the bugs bearable. No pun intended. grin.gif Anyways, if this is your first bear trip, your gonna have a ball. Wish I was going with you. I would love to go to Canada bear hunting. I hunt with my bow at 70# and shoot a 2315 arrow with a 100gr G5 Montec on the end. I have yet to shoot a bear with my bow, but thats what I will be bringing again this year. I could not bring my bow last year do to a bad shoulder. Will be for sure though this year. grin.gif

Re: ontario bears

ya i practice all the time, shoot my bow year round....i have to aim on bear low and just back from the shoulder...is that right???? a very good friend of mine and his son have been with this outfitter 4 years now and has nothing but good things to say. and he is pretty picky so i hoping it will work out....as for the bugs....the outfitter says the black flies are gone by then but there will be mosquitos..but not bad.....my brother went with a differant outfitter a couple years back and they used off.....outfitter and my brother said it didnt affect the bears.....is that true......

Re: ontario bears

For the shot look for dead broadside or slight quartering away. On a broadside shot at a reasonable angle (ex 12 feet up and 15 yards from the bear) aim even with the back edge of the front leg, and half way between the bottom of the chest and top of the back. This should get you both lungs, and a bear down in under 50 yards most of the time. You want an exit hole so shoot accordingly. A well hit bear won't often go more than 50 yards, but if it does go farther you want two holes. The fat means they don't bleed externally a lot at times. As far as mosquitos it all depends on teh weather. If it is a wet year they will be thick! Be prepared, chances are there will be a lot of them. I use off, but as soon as i start baiting every day i climb to my stand and spray the tree trunk with off so they bears get used to it. That works really well. Ask the outfitter if he would do that, if not i might shy away from using it if at all possible. Big bears are smart and won't tolerate new smells real well. Younger bears do not really seem to care too much.

Re: ontario bears

I would not aim low on a bear. Espicially on one with somewhat long hair. I would aim about 1/2 way up right behind the shoulder. He wont go far if you hit him there. I do not use bug spray. You just never know what a bear might do if he smells you. Go scent free as much as you can. That can be hard with it being so warm, but do it as much as you can.
