Adjam5
It looks like sound biology is finally winning over politics. Westchester county borders NYC, and its county executive will be testing a program to bow hunt in county park lands! Yippie!! I don't think its over yet...Remember, PETA's pres lives in Westchester county and so do the Clintons. So I imagine a few protests will pop up. Check it out. This really is good news for NY bowhunters. http://www.lohud.com/article/20090106/NEWS01/901060353/0/SPORTS01
Flintlock1776
Hopefully, it will open to hunters and they won't hire out to some company to cull the herd. Keep us posted on developments
RangerClay
This is cool! Are they talking about during the regular season or opening a special season next month!
Adjam5
They are talking about next years seasons I believe. I live across the Hudson from Westchester, and have been in contact with the Wildlife Rep for our county. He was part of the effort to push that plan in Westchester and is hoping its success will spill over to our county here in Rockland. You know whats funny? Reading the comments from the bunny huggers who posted on the newspapers website regarding this decision. These people have no clue
Doc
It is good to have some of these municipalities understand that archery hunting can be an effective way to control urban and suburban deer populations. However, I do hope that whoever is organizing this hunt is taking precautions to ensure that the hunters involved are competent with their equipment and responsible with their shot selection. I'm sure that for at least a year or two, that hunt will be under a microscope with the anti's ready to document and distribute every case of wounded animals that they can video or photograph. We have to be sure that we become a tool of effective management rather than a tool of the animal rights wackos. Doc
Adjam5
Good point Doc. I do think the county will be holding, as they have in the past; a archery proficiency test to be able to hunt in these parks. You have to keep 3 arrows on a paper plate at 30 yards. The test is always during the day and during working hours. Making it hard for some to attend and get certified. I also believe non marring tree stands have to be used and no branches or flora cut or moved for shooting lanes too. Orange was not mentioned.
