Re: What do you do While on Stand

I LOVE watching the Ozarks awake in the early morning. Im sure Im not the only one who does this...but I like to sit completely motionless and screw with squirrels and birds...They'll start chirpin at you if you move b/c they dont know what the heck you are! It can be quite entertaining!

Sit there and absorb Gods great outdoors.

I will usually find the radius around my stand to where I can accurately shoot and estimate how far it is exactly so I know if one does come in It will be alright to make a shot. And doing this I can also avoid taking shots that are out of my reach.

There are plenty of squarrels to see scurrying around, bluejays chirping. The time gets passed pretty quickly when you are involved at watching/thinking about something.

I will every once in a while pick a location in which I could climb next time if I dont feel my spot is going to give me good results. Many of times I will wonder if I will be in the same location come shotgun season or will I want to move depending on their patterns.

My favorite time is getting out there and get climbed up the tree right when the sun just starts to come up...what a beautiful sight grin.gif

Wait, try to stay awake, wait some more, daydream, wait, see big buck, pull gun up, put crosshairs on neck, pull trigger--- then I wake up!

WOW!!!! Some of you guys are a tough crowd!! So what is some guy reads while on stand, or if some guy plays video games or rips leaves apart? The post asked what guys do on stand not what you shouldn't do on stand. Everyone has their own quirks while sitting in a tree. I for one read Louis lamour books to pass the time, if I can't here the slightest noise while reading maybe I should go home and watch t.v. Why am I NOT FOCUSED if I'm reading a book a page or 2 at a time?? I don't think I've exactly been unsuccessful.

If you are doing anything else beside scanning your hunting grounds, you are not giving your hunt 110%. Majority of you hunters know that when those deer finally show up they make absolutely no noise. Weird, 130lbs deer making no noise. But its true. Concentrate on your surroundings so you can catch that glimpse of them you need to get yourself ready for that shot.

Then I'm definately not giving it 110% if you're standards are the gospel. I'll continue to do what I do despite the fact that some guys think they are doing a better job than myself and the other guys who do other things to kill time.

Re: What do you do While on Stand

well this depends on the situation, if I've been out there for 4 or 5 hours without seeing so much as a squirrel I usually take a nap. Sometimes I bring electronic games, sometimes magazines and sometimes books. During gun season I usually don't do this because the action can be fast and furious, one time I had been in the blind for no more than 10 min before 2 dogs ran some does behind me, I always try to be prepared for those deer when they are pressured like that by dogs and other hunters. During bow season I most often take little naps because I rarely see deer earlier than the last hour before sunset, I just keep my ears open.

BTW, I actually shot my first buck less than 5 min after waking up from a nap, 15 min after that I shot my second one.

i do w/e it takes to pass the time. Magazines, books, video games, nap, play w/ sticks, leaves, and mud(this is when it comes down to extreme boredness). If i'm in my tower stands over lookin the CRP fields then me and my buddies talk on our walkie talkies or i talk on my cell phone. i shot to great bucks one yr while on the phone, had to tell that person to hold on for a sec lol
