Hoyt fanatic
I want everyone to post their one that got away stories cause I know all ya'll got one. Here's mine. I was at my Grandma's pond one day. Just walking around the edge to go to the other side when I see this huge shadow. I tossed my 4# Zebco in front of him with a big minnow on it. He swam away and I thought I had scared him off. Then the bobber sank and I pulled back. We fought for a couple of minutes and he even jumped out of the water so I could see him. He was HUGE! Then he took my line under a log on the bottom and snapped it. I was very sad, but the worst part was still to come. I went back a couple of months later and my Grandma handed me a newspaper. It showed a guy that had caught the same Bass the next day. He had weighed in at 13 pounds. I still look for him every time I go up there. Guest TennesseeTurkey
LOL man thats a bummer, I did something like that once but the fish is still in the lake. I was just fishin withmy cousin on our uncle's pond. I was using a purple/black 7 in worm, working it up and down finally all of a sudden I said man, I'm stuck (and I thought I was hung up on a stump or something) only to have the biggest bass I've ever seen come to the side of the boat and my line to break :'(. Turkeygirl
I was fishing an inlet at our near by lake...in the spring when the water is still coming up from when the lake gets let out during the winter. Anyway the rainbows spawn up the inlet as it is a creek when the lake is low. I threw my line in and ended up hooking something huge! It was unwinding my reel and I had no control and as soon as I caught a glimpse of it...I think it was a huge rainbow...it was light/silvery colored of what I could see....the fish broke the line.... that was bummer, lol
Dawg
I have had quite a few of the one that got away. One was during a tournament Tracy Byrd was putting on. It was down to the last hour, the last 15 minutes pa the last hour. I was fishind a Carolina rugged green pumpkin super fluke. One hit my line and took it straight down. I fought with it for about a minute and "snap." It jumped about 40 yards out from the boat trying to spit the fluke and looked to be about a 8 lbs. largemouth. Wouldn't have won the tourny but would have got me in some money. Last year I was fishing the same area during the spawn and had one load up on my rig but never got it out of the grass. It snapped my line within 45 seconds.
Dakota
I was fishing a small private lake here in town that I have access to. I was fishing off of the dock and ended up hooking into a lunker using a just hook, bobber and crawler. I got it onto the dock and it was a HUGE walleye, biggest one I'd ever caught! It was probably at least 30" and five pounds...and then it got off and flopped back into the water!!!! The next day, however, I caught my biggest fish ever, a 45" 20lb. flathead out of the same small lake! Dakota
Tominator
Had more than one biggun break me off. One of the most memorable was something in Lake Erie. Fishing with my dad and uncle hooked on to something, fought it for a couple minutes, got close to landing it, and whatever it was had enough playing, turned his head and snapped me off. Have no idea what it was. Uncle Ray says you can make it anything you want when that happens, so for me, it was a 12lb walleye.
fly
Fly fishing the Provo river in Utah last fall I hooked up with a big trout of some kind. Not sure since the river holds Brookies, Browns, Rainbow, and possibly more? This trout was likely the biggest I had ever hooked (I didn't get a real good look at him). The current was torrent and he kept heading for it. Well I almost had him. I had my net out and missed on my first attempt which was too bad becasue he broke my line before I got a second chance. Rhino
The most memorable one that got away was back in 1975. Yep it still makes me sick. I was bass fishing in a lake late one afternoon and stuck a big one usning a white spinner bait. I couldn't turn him at all and he just kept taking out line until my line snapped. The worst thing was after he broke my line he came completely out of the water still trying to shake that spinner bait off. Made me sick to see how big he really was. I've lost bigger fish while salt water fishing but that one really hurt.
Gator
Last year catfishing up at Kaw Lake. Wasn't my line, was a friends. After catching a 58lb flathead, and two 20lb blues, we had a 16/0 Diacchi circle hook STRAIGHTENED out. Don't know what was on there, could have been a big gar for all we know, BUT for all we know to could have been that 107lb flathead we are looking for just the same
