How big is a 7mm?

My buddy was wanting a 300WSM in an Encore, but found out they discontinued the 300wsm because they were weak. We were wondering how big a 7mag was because my other buddy has one and loves it. How does it compare to .260 or 30 cal, etc. I just don't know my 'mm'. wink.gif

Funny....I got a call from him just as I was typing this! He says it is .284. He got the Encore ordered and on the way.....

Re: How big is a 7mm?

Yup. a 7mm is a .280. The 7mm is right in the middle of a .260 and a .30,,,kinda the best of both worlds. The 7mmo8,280,7mmm, etc. are all good cartridges for deer sized game. The 7mmm is even a little much. No one needs a .300 mag for deer. Some prefer it though. It's a personal thing for sure. I will stick with the time proven 30/06 and .270 Win forever. After the mighty Hoyt of course. grin.gif

Re: How big is a 7mm?

i bought a Browning BLR in .300 WSM in december. i love that gun. i was shooting dad's Remington 700 .300 Win Mag before, i just love the magnums for some reason. dad likes his .308. i am interested in starting moose hunting soon, so that was part of the reason for going with the .300 WSM, good for deer and moose. just a shorter shell, easier to carry than those big win mag cannon shells. grin.gif

Re: How big is a 7mm?

well the 7mm mag is a great caliber and it is a .284 same as a 280

i love my 7mm mag and its the only cal i use at the moment.i it will make quick work for a deer and it wount do any mor damage than a 270 or a 30.06

all the 7mm mag is, is a 300 win mag necked down to the .284 cal from remington.

That's what I was trying to figure out, I knew the bullet sizes were the same, I just was not sure if a .308 cartridge was bigger than a 7.62 NATO that i would put in an SKS.

[/ QUOTE ]

The SKS does not use the 7.62 NATO. It shoots the 7.62x39. The 7.62 NATO is 7.62x51.

The 7.62 NATO is the .308 Winchester. The military uses thicker brass to ward off case head separation when its used in the full auto guns. Its just fine to use a .308 Win load in a military gun in semi auto mode.

Um, i'm not sure how exact you were trying to get, but 6.5mm is .264, not .260, and 6.8mm is .277, not .270

[/ QUOTE ]

Ok, I should have added these are the equivalent calibers, oh wait, shocked.gif I did. tongue.gif I would have said these are the bullet sizes used in the metric versions, if i used the actual bullet size. smirk.gif

I still don't know exactly what you are trying to say, a 6.5 mm is .264 caliber. I guess maybe you were just giving the common name of it? I just wasn't sure b/c you quoted the 5.56 as .224 instead of .223 as most people know it...anyway no big deal smile.gif
