KirkV
I have a question for you all, as you may or may not know I will be going on the Realtree Moose hunt in Alaska this year. I plan on using my TC Pro Hunter muzzleloader to take this moose. Does anybody know if the 250 Grain Sabot will be enough to down the animal or do I have to bump up the size of the bullet? I would really like to keep the 250 grain if possible since the BCD reticle Nikon is already comensated for the drop and it shoots like a tack driver. Thanks Kirk
PotashRLS
I like the Hornady SST in 300 gr. out of my Encore. I use 120gr. of fffg Pioneer Powder behind it for deer. I don't use a BDC scope either, but I would guess with a muzzleloader, you wouldn't have to be worried about shooting a moose far enough away that that would be an issue. Just a guess though. KirkV
Well Potash with the 250 grain sabot and 150 grains of powder the scope and gun combo will put a bullet in the same hole at 50 yards, 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards, 2 1/2" groups at 200 yards and 6" groups at 300 yards. So it becomes very important to know if 250 grain bullets are large enough.
hoosierhunter
Kirk that might be a good question to post in the big game room. I personally have only experience with whitetails and shoot the same gr/ld combo you do, but just off the top of my head I would guess that to be a little light...... wtnhunt
Probably a good question to ask Kathleen Kirk. You probably need to get some ballistics together on loads and bullets. From what I am looking at, it looks like at 200 yards a 250 grain sabot pushed by a magnum powder charge of 150 grains of pyrodex is only going to provide 982 ft./lbs. of energy with 11.5 inches of drop and a velocity of 1330 fps. Of course that will vary some, but kind of gives you an idea. Would assume 150 yards would be about the max range if keeping with the above suggested minimum of 1500 ft./lbs., a 240 grain xtp will deliver 1468 ft./lbs at that distance with 150 grains of pyrodex according to the ballistic table I am looking at. VermontHunter
250 grn. Shockwave with 150 grns. of triple seven will be more than enough to take down a Bull Moose at 200+ yards ..
