brownanddown
Re: Cartridge Comparison well said 270wsm and if you hand load you can crank up a 270wsm to shoot as flat as a 7 mm without the recoil
AJ
Re: Cartridge Comparison Welcome to the group 300 Wby. I also tote the .300 Weatherby Magnum on my elk hunting excursions. I take a .338 Win Mag as backup incase something happens to my primary gun.
Guest lilcrackshot
Re: Cartridge Comparison Good job AJ. Sounds like the magnum guys are not doing much better then my
maytom
Re: Cartridge Comparison We might be able to use rifles for deer this season depending on when the Governor signs the new Bill. I'm leaning with the .7-08mm caliber in a Savage bolt action. Like you stated above, this would be a fine caliber to get the job done. AJ
Re: Cartridge Comparison Yep maytom, its definately a good deer cartridge. It has enough power to take any deer but does not have excessive recoil. Good choice.
AJ
Re: Cartridge Comparison Why did I not mention all of the Wby cartridges? The 300 Wby is the most popular of the Wby lineup. There is a small niche that their cartridges fall into but most are not something that the average shooter can take advantage of. I understand that you are a Weatherby fan, but personal biases often fog reality. They are ok guns but for the vast majority of hunting, they don't do anything other rounds do. I have owned Weatherby guns and have a custom 700 chambered in 300 Wby that I like much better than Wby's guns. But again, thats just my personal opinion. Kenny Jarrett does have his own line if wildcats that are similar to the Gibbs cartridges. Since they are wildcats, they are not included. TexasDeerHunter
Re: Cartridge Comparison Thanks for the info AJ. I have owned and shot most of the calibers mentioned and have settled on what I think suits me best. I got rid of my magnums because I don't like recoil. I have ended up with a .223, .260, and a .30-06. Before deciding on these three I compared them as you did. It is pretty amazing that they all are so close in comparison. Chuck Hawkes has a pretty good website with tables on ballistics and recoil so you guys can compare the kick of any cartridge to another. It's not so much what cartridge you shoot, it is knowing the cartridge you shoot.
