fly
I know there are several states still in the running, but as of the 16th I know many archers are now looking foward to next season. As of a couple hours ago my bowhunting season is now over. Just at (or maybe a little past) legal shooting light a deer came into my stand exactly the same as the 11-pointer I shot 365 days earlier. The deer I saw tonight did not have antlers. I'm not sure if it was a doe or buck that had shed already. I initially pulled on it, but decided not to take the 20 yard shot due to low light and the chance the deer might have been a buck. It was cold (5 deg F) and windy (10-20mph)! However, I saw several deer at 4:45pm moving (just not my way). Too far to tell what they were. I thought these frigid temps would have them up and about and they were. It's been a tough season that's for sure. I feel very satisfied in combating the elements and being rewarded with one last encounter and opportunity and then deciding against taking a marginal shot. I'd like to thank everyone here for commenting on my harvests (including stories) this year and responding to my questions. If you'd like share how your last day went. >Frank
Mach1
Had to work and wasn't able to get out. I talked to my brother on my way home and he was out driving the roads and saw at least 30 deer in a standing cornfield just before the sun went down. He could see at least one good buck with only half a rack. If the cold weather pushes the geese farther south, I'll probably be set up near this cornfield this weekend to try and fill my last firearm tag during our antlerless season. backwoods07
Unfortunately, my last hunt was this past Monday and I passed on two does. It's been way too cold to get out there since then. This season went by too fast!! I really didn't hunt as much as I'd like.
pse arhcer
My last hunt was Dec. 30th, and was very frustrating to say the least. (public land) For the past week or so, the deer had been moving 5-10 minutes b4 sundown, and I was hoping to get one more doe for the freezer. Well, about 15 min. b4 sundown, I hear something walking through a marshy area that leads to my stand. I stand up and get ready...instead of a deer, it was a "hunter" carrying his bow & stand. He was just heading out to go hunting! A little more than 40 minutes of light, and he's heading out to go hunt?! I was fairly upset, but I tried to be civil. All he kept saying was that is was public land. I understand that, but have some respect. Did he really expect to see anything making all that noise that close to the end of shooting time? To make it worse, almost the exact same thing happened the night before at my other stand I use. This time it was 20 min. b4 sundown. Sorry for ranting, but it was a very frustrating way to end the season.
huntermq32
I have been hunting pretty hard lately but the deer were alittle to weary. I was seeing 20 to 30 on a regular baisis. Their were just to many eyes to fool and I just kept spooking them when I would pull my bow back.Tuesday I had a real good 10pt come buy at 30 yards and when I took a shot the arrow just skipped accross the snow at about 20 yards. I don't know what happed but my arrow never buried in the snow it was just laying on top and the snow is like powder. That was my last bow hunt of the season it was frustraing but on the bright side I finally got close the 10pt that I was playing cat and mouse with all year. This next week I will go to an indoor range and find out if my bow is broken. Stryder
It all ended last weekend with me not in a stand. Saturday was the last day for bow, and I woke up with my sinuses acting up. Couldnt breathe well. Couching and hacking, I just went back to bed and will wait until next year. Oh well, at least the big "cow" I've been after made it another year alive. Well, unless the cold, coyote, or old age gets her before then.Definitely going to weld up a few more stands so I have better wind selection. That and I need to work on my "approach" lanes to the existing stands so I'm not as noisy getting to them.
