kawiram
I found a guy on CL selling a nice mule deer mount. I ruined the hide on my best buck. (Bullet exited in the neck, big hole). The mount is very close to my deers size, body wise, and coloring. My question is, can a taxidermist put my antlers on the mount? And is this usually expensive? Any input would be great, as I'd really like to display my best and most memorable trophy. He's an 8pt. with a 22" outside spread. Not a monster, but I believe he's a whitetail cross. I'll try to snap a pic this weekend.
sasksheds
Probably but the best would be just to let him use another cape & let him go from scratch. They can always find a cape somewhere.Or wait till next year & save a cape from your own. whttlbucksteve
I had one done like that was about half the price of a new mount. But it can be done.
Guest TennesseeTurkey
When I was little my papaw took me hunting for the first time, and he killed a monster buck for the state of Mississippi. Well me or him either one could get the buck loaded onto the 4 wheeler so he drug him 3 miles home. Needless to say the cape was ruined and bald where we drug it that far. Go check out my mounts thread I posted you'd never been able to tell that was a doe cape. My advice if you get another chance kill a doe and get yourself a new cape. (not to mention some good muley meat in the process )
RTF
Yes it can be done without any problems. The antlers will be cut off both mounts at below the burrs. Your antlers will be attached to the new mount using studs.
slughunter
I got a deer at the taxidermist right now having a rack swap out and touch up. Same as you, got a nice deer head on craigslist for $20. My taxidermist is charging me $75 for his work. So $95 for a nice whitetail mount. Cant complain with that. -shane

Would be what I would probably do. Those antlers sure do look like they are from a whitetail and not from a mulie.
kawiram
Yeah, I got him back home in SE New Mexico. Ive never seen a whitetail there, but who knows.

All the taxidermist I have talked to just remove the old skull cap with antlers, clean the clay off, and put the new skull cap in and sew it back up. Seems like it would be a better option than cutting the antlers off and attaching them with a stud. -shane
Zambo
I agree with wtnhunt, they look a lot like a whitetail. I have never seen a cross deer though.
kawiram
They're all over in West Texas, where there is an abundance of the two species. Its odd though, as Ive never seen a Muley buck running whitetail does, Only Whitetail bucks running muley does.
kawiram
He's definately a muley, I dont have any digital pics of his body. I'll see if I can figure out how to scan the photos with my printer.

redkneck
I dont know anything about a cross deer, but you put those antlers on a mule deer and that will look really bad.
