Re: any advice for a new turkey hunter?

Best advice I followed myself last year.....go with someone who knows what they are doing wink.gif I got to see a struttin Tom but didn't get a shot off. It was awesome. I learned a lot and had some company while hunting. If you don't have that option....stay still and tease him into you. Know how to purrr!!! Practice on your calls while watching a turkey video.

Be versatile on several different calls(slate, box, mouth, push/pull) If you practice them all you will know which one you are best with, but you can use the others in certain situations. Good luck. I hope we both get a gobbler this year!! Maybe Two! grin.gif

Re: any advice for a new turkey hunter?

That's great you got someone to take you out. I basically taught myself by reading books and magazines, watching turkey hunting on TV, and askign questions on Realtree. Of course I didn't get a turkey my first spring though I did my first fall. I got one the next spring but all you can do is be patient and be ready. I think turkeys are just as hard if not sometimes harder to hunt than deer. Good luck to you!

Keep a good divorce lawyer on retainer...have enough money saved to get you thru turkey season...line up a new job for after turkey season...put a picture of yourself up in your kids's rooms so they will remember what you look like...forget about crappie fishing...

Congratulations! You have made a choice that will change your life forever.

Re: any advice for a new turkey hunter?

As everyone else said, learning to use your call is VERY important.

As a beginning turkey hunter, I think it is just as important to learn when to call & how much to call. It is very easy to "call too much & call too loud". I think it is better to call to little then tooo much.

Also, If you know where the bird you are after is roosting, get as close to him as you can w/out spooking him.. That is something I think people have trouble doing..

Good Luck.. You're going to love it!!
