mrswtnhunt
Who all is planning on going to the Realtree moose hunt in Alaska coming up in August. I am going and taking my 12 year old daughter. I am going to get a moose/bear tag for me and a bear tag for her. She is getting real excited and so am I:D. Was just wondering who all had plans on trying to make it up there.

mrswtnhunt
Have any of the specifics been setup yet? Date? Location etc. I had planned on coming, but not sure if I will be able to now. The date is August 19th and the location is Crescent Lake. It is about 45 minutes from Kathleen's house(aksheephuntress). I have talked to her on the phone a couple times. My hubby has done some looking and it looks like we will fly out of Nashville to Chicago then to Alaska. We will probably go with Alaskan Airlines and it looks like the tickets will be about $750 round trip. When we get to Anchorage we will take a 4 hour train ride to Seward (where Kathleen lives) It has some amazing scenery. As the time gets closer I will know more about the details. texastrophies
I looked this up a while back, but for a refresher, are the licenses & tags over the counter or draw? And if they are draw, when do the applications have to be in?

And if they are draw, when do the applications have to be in? My understanding is bear and moose are over the counter Jeff. Can be purchased online in advance too. texastrophies
Good deal, is this open for any and everybody?
wtnhunt
Good deal, is this open for any and everybody? Good question for Catrina to ask Kathleen, Jeff. She will probably try to call her today. She missed her yesterday, but she did talk with Terry for a few minutes. From the way the original thread ran, I would assume it is an open hunt for anyone who can make it, think that was what my wife was asking as to who had intentions on going. I know that Kathleen was planning to start a thread at some point with all the details, but unfortunately she has not been on here. Hopefully she will be able to get on here soon and get more information for everyone who is interested.

aksheephuntress
....The Realtree Alaska Moose (and bear) Hunt and Gathering 2009....... -I am so glad you all went ahead and started an official thread for this..and stickying it.... (the "Are you gals behaving " thread was getting a bit long- but, it would have been a hoot to see that get a sticky, for the hunt info-lol-) -Crescent /Carter Lake, unit 7 (the 2 beautiful lakes, located next to each other, are stocked with nice Rainbows and Grayling )- -We will start out at my house...hike in as a group on the 19th....opener starts Aug. 20th..... -Yes......Non-res. moose and black bear tags are available over the counter, or online (with an additional non-res. hunting license)- William posted the correct link- -I am paying for Kirk's license and tag....according to the rifle auction deal...and he gets first shot at a moose (or bear, if he chooses instead) -Catrina and her daughter get second shot at a moose, or first shot at a black bear , after Kirk- -This will be an awesome, intense, and really enjoyable hunt with a LOT going on concurrently....-All participating and wanting to hunt will need to have individual tags and licenses... -You do not need to hunt to participate....there will be awesome fresh water fishing right at camp; a serious plan to go out for a day for salmon and halibut when we come out; and opportunity for EVERYONE to help with the hunt, capture awesome photos, explore, and take home a massive amount of moose meat, bear, and halibut.... -We need to realistically limit the number of moose tags to THREE at the most....so, please pm me first -those with a moose tag will also have the option of taking a black bear with that tag.... -the Black bear are plentiful ,gorgeous, and real tasty..... -the group will have my house as a "staging area" before we all drive up and hike in together to the camp...and a place to crash, clean-up, and make yourself at home, when we come out- -we will be splitting up into smaller scouting/hunting groups during the day....and gathering back together at the forestry cabin and wall tent on the lake, at night... -the fishing is awesome for whoever opts to fish....... -heck, anyone who wants to even come up for the gathering and just fish and hold down the fort in camp while we're out hunting is more than welcome.... -you don't have to buy a tag if you don't intend on carying a gun,or harvesting....you will need the hunting license, though.... -I highly recommend considering getting the hunting/fishing license combination ..... -more specifics/nailing down logistics and answering questions ,in the next coming months... ***-Real important- *** -I am not a guide or outfitter- nor am I claiming to "guide" anyone on this hunt....I do know this area well, and it is very special to me... -I can say, though, that I am sure no one will come away from this hunt dissapointed...- -I won't be taking any money for anything, either...unless it is something along the lines of us maybe pooling together for groceries, for example (I'll have all that packed up and ready before the 18th, anyway).... ...This is a Realtree hunt, and gathering, not a money-making venture on my part....(I feel the need to make this clear up front, especially on this thread on the internet, in case there might be some outsider "snooping around", curious or assuming about my motives, or the nature of this hunt....) -lol- -We will have a lot of things flown in a day or two early...-like wall tent, stuff for the "camp kitchen", boat motor, canoe, fishing poles, etc.... -so...-these things will be there before our hike in.... (did I mention that it is 3 miles??)... -don't worry....it's a nice trail, and my 8 and 6 year old handled it just fine, this last summer...caught a lot of nice fish, too ) -I have to go fix dinner, now.... -kathleen
PotashRLS
I would/could not go right now anyway, but by your previous description, I feel it is now something I need to experience at some time in my life. What an awesome adventure. Our country is still full of wonderful people.
colorado bob
Kathleen, Can a successful hunter donate the meat? I know all the meat has to come out----but after that can I donate to a local family for their winter supply? Flying home a moose would be pretty pricey. KirkV
Kathleen I can not say enough about the way you have set this hunt up and the way it sounds it will be. I cannot wait to get up there and enjoy the beauty of Alaska with you all. It will be a treat to meet a few of the other folks as well from the forum. I will post more on this thread when I get home and can think of everything. For now it is out to dinner with my wife on the vacation spot she loves. stevebeilgard
good job on getting this going, kathleen. i'd originally thought it was on the 9th, not the 19th. i'm going to see if i can still make it with the timing for the antelope hunt this fall. JJL
I will be up in Seward in June to hunt bear...... with Kathleen and Terry. I've got two weeks set aside for this hunt and expect on having a few extra days to fish, explore, take a few naps, and do some preliminary scouting for this August hunt. I received a pm from Catrina the other day asking if I would be coming up in August. My initial reaction was no, however, the more I think about it might be maybe. It would definitely be an asset to have another leader on this hunt who has been there and knows the area possibly increasing the chances of success for everyone. Besides, some of you need to meet the "Dancing Queen". Why doesn't somebody twist Scott's arm? Have him make a charitable contribution to the JJL travel fund and I'll come. Lord knows JJL has made enough donations to the Realtree Auctions......................hint hint hint. time will tell JJL
texastrophies
Here are a few pics I pulled up off of Google earth. The first one is the Crescent Lake area. This is the Crescent Saddle Cabin. (Not sure if this is the one Kathleen is refering to or not.) The next two are the scenery at and around Crescent Lake.
