Doc
I have heard of no decision to make any form of AR a statewide mandate. Also, I hope that NY will put a bit more thought into it rather than just slapping a one-size fits all blanket restriction across the entire state. That is about the sloppiest form of deer management that I can think of. However, nothing would surprise me. Doc
Adjam5
Here ya go...straight from the DEC's mouth. DEC e mailed me this last week. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27663.html I for one, am all for it. I have land and hunt 3H where the AR have been the last 3 years, and I can tell you it is working. Less bucks are being taken, but better quality bucks are being harvested. My neighbor in 3H and his son, who have lived there his whole life(55 years), took the biggest bucks of their lives this past season. Two 8pointers measuring 90" and 106" respectively. Those are giants for that area if you know the bucks that are taken from there previous years. If you have limited time and land to hunt, I can see where this would hurt those type hunters. Meat hunters can shoot does. Put in for the DMP and wait if you have to. I waited 3 years( told NO 3 years in a row, built up points) to get my doe tag for that area 3H, that I used in gun season. I also burned my bow tag on a doe up there. I hope the AR's stay in certain areas that need the help in growing bigger /older deer.
Doc
What a great web-page. They certainly answered a whole bunch of questions in one short article. I found it interesting that the number of 2-1/2 and 3-1/2+ buck harvests hardly went up at all from the period before AR. All that really happened is the total buck harvest shrunk significantly. How do you explain that????? Doc
Flintlock1776
It does make sense. Perhaps they should consider a "1st Timer" permit that allows a newly licensed resident hunter to take any deer. Just to get them in the game so to speak. Then they could learn to hold back waiting for a big buck. There is a certain amount of pressure to get your first deer. I don't think the hunting ranks are growing too fast anywhere that this idea would make too much of a significant impact on the herd. Just a thought........................ According to antlers the best way is too go by the spread being out past the ears to protect 1 1/2 yr old bucks. - Dan
Adjam5
Did anyone read the last issue of North American Whitetail? They did a 3 page article on this same topic in the actual areas where this AR pilot program is in motion. I hunt 3H and have for the last 20 years If anyone would like a scanned version of this article e mail me at [email protected] It answers a lot of questions.
