-6 degrees...Squirrel Hunt!

I heard on the news last night that the temperatures would be the coldest in 2 or 3 decades...so when I told my wife I'd be squirrel hunting this morning, she looked at me like I'm insane. But she also has learned that, when it comes to some things, I am crazy.

So, I woke up at 6:00 AM this morning and the thermometer here said 6 degrees below zero. After a quick breakfast and some coffee, I was off to the woods. I got in and sat down about 20 minutes after daylight, and the woods were dead quiet. I was using my squirrel call and I knew the squirrels wouldn't be coming down on the ground, so I was trying to spot one stretching out on a limb. I began moving a little, and then calling and watching the limbs. Around 9 AM I did this sequence, and saw a gray sitting on a limb. I would estimate he was 60 yards out, and I squeezed off a round from my .22 WMR. I saw him drop from what ended up being a good neck shot.

I continued hunting for a few more hours, saw one more, but he was on to me, and was able to get into his den tree before I could get a clear shot.

(I was COLD, give me a break!)

I knew today wouldn't be the day to fill my limit, I just wanted to get out in the cold weather and enjoy a crist, quiet morning in the woods.
