Turkey Load

This will be my first year turkey hunting just wanting some opinions on the best shells to use. Also wanted to know what choke tube everyone uses.

Thanks

Joseph

What you need to do is pattern your shotgun with different loads and chokes to find out which will perform the best out of your gun. No two shotguns shoot the same, even of the same make and model. It would help if your family or friends have the same gun and buy a few rounds from them. Also if they would let you use their chokes in your gun. This will help you narrow down the process, if not, it could be very expensive.

I use an Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag 3.5" with a Comp-N-Choke XXX full, 3.5" Winchester Supremes. I tried four different chokes, and bought six different kinds of ammo until I came up with this load/choke combo. But what works for me, may not work for you!

I use 3'' Winchester Xtended range # 5's......almost as good as the nitros IMHO...but like they told you, shoot different loads with different chokes , but don't worry about it if you can't go out and buy a bunch of different chokes, the main thing is finding the load that shoots best with what ya got.

By spending money in a good quality after market choke you will narrow down your choices for shells as you will find a much better pattern out of most guns.

Choke constriction is a very important part along with how the taper is in the choke that your using. After years of testing patterns on my own range I have found that this maybe a good start to anyone that is starting out.

12 gauge - Pure Gold - Indian Creek chokes

.660 -.665 the .660 is good for copper loads and the .665 is a great heavy shot choke.

20 gauge - Pure Gold - Indian Creek chokes

.550 -.555 I have found that Heavy shot with the .555 allows a 20 gauge to extend its range by another 5 - 10 yards giving the hunter a 40 yard gun.

So far the Hevi 13 in 3 inch #6 is very hard to beat out of the 20 gauge. I am waiting to try out the new federal wad lock heavy loads in the 20 to see how they fair.

I hope this may help some...

I use either Federal or Winchester 3 1/2" 12ga. 2 1/4oz. #6s out of my Mossberg Ulti-mag. Both pattern very well out to 50 yards but that is my absolute maximum. They are not the high velocity but I have yet to have one duck:eek:. I am a firm believer that the more pellets down range in the kill zone, the better you are. I know a lot of folks think 6s are a little light, but I have yet to lose a bird inside 50 yards. You just need to practice and know your gun. It is a bit expensive at first until you find a load your gun likes. Buy some different loads and a couple of ice packs for your face and hit the range:D

Kinda hard to recommend an exact load and choke since I don't know which gun and chamber size you are shooting. Start by contacting Indian Creek chokes, their web site is www.indiancreekss.com. Tell them what you're shooting and ask them to recommend a choke. Buy what they recommend. Next, log on to www.nitrocompany.com and purchase the recommended load for your gun(Either the 3" or 3.5" 4x5x7 Hevi-Shot). Once you do this you will have the best possible combo for your gun, bar none. I would also recommend a good set of fiber optic sights for your gun if you do not already have them. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

For my 870 w/ turkey barrel I use the Ventilator by Remington w/ 3" #5's Remington Copper Plated Turkey loads(2 oz shot), for the 1187 back up I use my patternmaster w/ 3" #6's in the same brand shells. Went through 5 tubes and 7 types of ammo until I got the results I liked out to 50 yards. The comment was made about fiber optic sights, they help greatly with point of aim shifts, and also a stck that fits you well, especially seated is essential. I put the Remington sureshot stock on, and that was one of the best investments I made besides the sighted barrel...Good luck in your search! Eric

I just bought a Mossberg 835 UltiMag with an UltiFull choke and a TruGlo red dot sight. The two loads I'm planning on testing right now are Federal Premium 3" 1 7/8 oz. #4s as well as Winchester Supreme 3 1/2" 2 oz. #5s. While my shoulder may end up resenting me in the end, I'm taking no chances considering where I'm going to be hunting this year. Good luck!

Your shoulder won't be as mad as your cheek will be.

What shoots good out of my gun might shoot badly out of yours. When I first started I went out and shot all kinds of different shells with different choke combinations that way you are sure that you have the best pattern. I shoot a Benelli Nova with a Primos Jelly Head choke and Federal Flight Control 3.5" no. 5. That combination had the best pattern for me. Best of luck this season.
