Tominator
I had a $25 gift certificate to Cabelas so I got a tanning kit and a skull bleaching kit. I'm going to do a European mount on my '05 buck and I'm going to try and tan my son's first deer's hide. Here's what he looks like before:

Ohiobucks
I'll bet it will look awesome. What happened to your metal tag? Make sure to keep that thing with the skull, or someone will be calling 1-800-POACHER.
craig mack
Good luck, I bet it will look great. When your looking at it on the wall (when its finished) what song will you be playing on the piano? Should we start calling you Elton John? Make sure to keep that thing with the skull, or someone will be calling 1-800-POACHER. It's there. Look real close to the left antler. It kind of blends in on the skull part, but you can see the end of it down behind the eye socket.
Tominator
what song will you be playing on the piano? Should we start calling you Elton John? That's all my wife man. She's a genius on that thing.

Hardwood_HD
if i was you i would just drop the whole thing in a tub full of bleach and let it set for a week ...
Tominator
Is it a law that you have to keep your tag attached? I don't think so, but you would have to produce the tag if the law wanted to see it. I have one buddy who refuses to keep his tag on the mounts, and one who keeps them on. Personally, I keep them on. RTF
Is it a law that you have to keep your tag attached? Every state is different and it is always best to check your state regs when it comes to tag seals.
Turkeygirl
Post a pic when your done! Similar to the skull I'm doing a euro on...but it's got 5 points on the left side, 4 on the right and the very tip is broken off on the main beam on the left..maybe not quite as wide either, lol

Tominator
Got him soaking in some hot water now. There's just a touch of sinew on the back of the skull, and some "head cheese" down in the nasal and eye cavities. Hope to get the pyroxide on it today or tonight. Turkeygirl
I spent 3-4 hours yesterday scraping stuff off my mount...finally Andy and I decided to cut the jaw off...too much stuff to mess with and we wanted to mount it like our neighbor's, so we marked it and cut it off...still has stuff to scrape off and it kinds still smells funky, lol. Good luck Chris, can't wait to see some photos!
Tominator
Kind of worried about the fact that the stuff was freezing as I was spreading it on. It really didn't smell too bad as I was mixing it up and putting it on. Wondering if I should have gone ahead and done this inside as opposed to the garage. I mixed according to the instructions, and half of the mix was more than enough for one skull. In fact, half the mix could probably come close to doing two skulls. I had my '02 buck in the garage (the one where the dog took out of my garage and chewed the nose off ), so I did that one too. It will be a good experiment because that one had a little sinew and dark coloring on it. Fresh snow on, so I'm thinking of walking out back for a rabbit tonight. I'll check the skulls when I get done with that.
Tominator
Well, I'm not impressed. I think the cold had something to do with it. That and I think the skull needs to be wet so the bleach/pyroxide can soak in. I'm going to bring it in and try it again. It did lighten, but not to the degree that I want it. More to follow. I have one buddy who refuses to keep his tag on the mounts, and one who keeps them on. Personally, I keep them on. That is kind of interesting, what happens if you move to Ohio from elsewhere that does not require you to keep the tags and you have several mounts? Don't think I have tags for any of my mounts, actually think my taxidermist kept them, I don't remember ever getting tags back with any of my mounts.
