Yes ...Blackbears definately hibernate during the winter.

The higher altitude bears seem to go into a longer, more solid hibernating state, because of the longer, colder, winter weather.

Like ParrotHead says though, it depends on location.

The bears , for instance, in the Valley (at sea level ) where I live, go into a semi-hibernation. By this, I mean that they do wake up from time to time and wonder about to get a quick meal .... then go back to sleep. I have seen them out on numerous occassions, in Jan, Feb when the weather gets really warm.

I'm no biologist, but I have seen this for myself over the years.

We have lots of black bears here. shocked.gifwink.gif
