redkneck
I've had my mossberg 835 for about 4 years now, and have been less than impressed with it's ability to drop a turkey. anyone shot one of those stoegers? my dealer had a great deal on pumps last year and i am thinking about upgrading. Gator
I'm looking at a M2000 myself, interested to see what others may have to say
Guest towerslug2002
My brother in law has a Stoeger M2000 auto and never misses when we pheasant hunt. He says its the best shotgun he has ever fired, and I will say it's pretty nice, but I like my Nova better.
Hoosierbuck
I would think it would behoove you to try a different ammo/choke tube combination as opposed to a new shotgun. 3" #5 Winchesters and the factory choke have been good out of my 835, but maybe you would like a Carlson's, Primos, or Undertaker tube with 3 1/2" shells. redkneck
I've tried 2-3 loads (all 3.5") and a couple of chokes. It looks descent on paper, but i done had 2 birds run off at 30 yard shots, and another i had to shoot twice. I did better in the old days with my rem 1100. I have some friends though that love their 835. I'm kinda at a loss.
Hoosierbuck
If it looks decent on paper, but isn't getting the job done a few possibilities exist... -Your point of aim is off on the birds -the shells you are using are not effectively transferring energy because they are weak or the shot is too small There is more to think of , but I have to run... jcs3344
i have a stoger M2000. Had it for about 2 years now. Took it turkey huntin last year and killed 2 turkeys with it. i bought a primos jellyhead choke to go in it since i too had a 835 and was used to shooting 3 1/2 inche with factor choke. I figured if i was movin down to a 3 in i ought to get a aftermarket choke to "make up the difference" Both turkeys i shot with it dropped and didnt even flop around. One was at 40 yards. I duck hunt and dove hunt with this gun and have never had a problem with it. I love it.
dogdoc
i shoot a stoeger O/U and love it for wing shooting. Almost shoot it exclusively now. For turkey though I have an 835 set up with a red dot scope and use the factory turkey choke. I get excellent results out to 40 yards. The gun is absolutely deadly on turkeys. Put a red dot scope on that 835 and get it sighted in----no need to get a new gun the 835 will do all you need for turks! todd
redkneck
Thanks, Todd. I do have a turkey scope, but i never got the gun tapped for a mount. It's an older 835, i think the newer ones are tapped already.
smallmunster
I have both an 835 and a M2000. I've had the stoeger for 5 seasons and the 835 for about 6. I use the 835 for turkey although when I patterned the 2000 with its turkey choke it was as good if not better. I used to have a browning bps and have not used it since the day I got my stoeger for any waterfowl or upland. I shoot the stoeger really well and my brother got one two seasons ago and my dad got one this season. I have not used the pump stoeger at all though. The M2000 is much lighter that the 835 if that is a consideration for you. It was for me.
Dakota
I have never really been impressed with Stoegers. I used to work back behind the gun counter at Sportsman's Warehouse and we had more problems with customers returning them than with any other brand. As for the 835, I just bought one today in fact! I'd stick with it and try a better variety of turkey loads ranging from, Hevi-shot to Wingmaster to Federals or Winchester Supremes. Good luck and let me know how it goes! redkneck
i'm thinking this year, i'm gonna back down from the 3.5" and just pattern some 3". Aside from the hard kick, i've had a few ppl tell me they patterned better in their 835s. I'm getting less and less thrilled on the stoegers after this thread. thanks guys
clrj3514
my daddy has a Stoeger M2000. the automatic . its shoots fairly well. good on birds. but will kick the yeast out of a biscuit
dartonman
Man...I must be old school......I use 3 inch shells (Remington 4x6 duplex) and sometimes Federal #5 shot turkey loads in a Mossberg 500 with a green dot on the front, and an x full turkey choke, and it knocks them to the ground, and they dont move......switch to a good load, maybe only an xfull choke instead of xxxfull, and only shoot 3 inch for better control..........your Mossberg can be a killing machine when combined with the right stuff............al
redkneck
Yeah, i'm keeping it for this year, see if it can redeem itself. I'm going to 3" too. I killed turkeys from the time i was a kid till just about 3 yrs ago with 2 3/4", why i thought i needed a 3.5 i'll never know. Besides, that thing will rattle your teeth. hyperflow
My brother inlaw had bought one of thoes guns, I took it out goose/duck hunting one morning. I never regreted bringing a gun in my life. What a POS, it jamed every 2nd shot, the action was sloppy and it felt like i had a toy gun in my hands. I will stick with my benneli super black egale 2, and my remington 870 SP. IMO you can;t go wrong with a remington 870 supermag (not express), i have never even heard of sombudy having a problem with this gun.
